Journey for Sight 1988 Lion Ride raises eye bank funds

The Bir tle and Lac du Bonnet Lions Clubs sponsor a Journey For Sight By Snowmobile from January 21 to 24. Twenty riders begin at The Pas Manitoba and stop in Swan River Birtle and Portage la Prairie before arriving in Winnipeg to present pledge proceeds to the Lions Eye Bank at the annual telethon. Proceeds fund equipment and awareness to shorten corneal transplant waiting times.

Family Allowances Rise in Canada for 1988

Ottawa announces increases to Family Allowances for 36 million Canadians with 6.6 million children, raising monthly payments to 32.38 in most provinces. Alberta and Quebec will adjust rates by province. A new Child Tax Credit offers up to 489 per child for 1987 income families, with a November 1987 prepayment of 325 per eligible child for those earning 15000 or less. All parents should file 1987 tax returns to settle balances or receive full credits.

Binscarth Hosts Golden Gals In District Playdowns

HAMIOTA January 11 opened the District 3 playdowns in Binscarth with six teen rinks. Teams from Hamiota Virden Birtle Binscarth Ken ton Lenore Rivers and Shoal Lake competed. Wilma McCauley won the A side and Brooks Oakden and Kay Brooks battled for B side. McCauley defeated Brooks on the final and will join her team to Provincials in Virden in February.

Snowmobilers urged to practice safety

Winnipeg Manitoba snowmobilers are urged to follow safe riding practices and wear helmets as a safety measure. Bucklaschuk cites a 33 percent rise in registered snowmobiles and a 57 percent increase in personal injury accidents last year. An age restriction will apply once the Off Roads Vehicle Act takes effect, banning children under 14 from operating off road vehicles unless supervised by a parent or guardian.
