Manitoba Hydro rate hike: 4.5 percent April 1 1988

Manitoba Hydro announces an average 4.5 percent rate increase effective April 1 1988. Chair Marc Eliesen says Manitoba maintains the lowest electricity rate structure in Canada and reserves will absorb drought losses. Residential bill would rise about $1.60 monthly for 750 kWh usage. Net revenue projected about $16.0 million for year ending March 31 1989. Reserve funds expected to fall to $107.0 million by year end from drought.

First Baby of 1988 Born at Hamiota Health Centre

Ashley Christine Schweitzer was Hamiota’s first baby of 1988 born January 2 weighing nine pounds. She is the second daughter of Cam and Myrna Schweitzer of Decker. Local groups presented gifts to the newborn at the Hamiota District Health Centre.

New Year's Babies to Receive Infant Car Seats in Manitoba

For the sixth consecutive year the Manitoba Medical Association will gift a complimentary infant car seat to 11 Manitoba New Year’s babies. Recipients include Winnipeg hospitals Health Sciences Centre St Boniface Victoria Misericordia and Grace plus communities Selkirk Steinbach Hamiota Grandview Portage la Prairie and Thompson.

Horn foursome winners in Hamiota curling event

Eight rinks competed starting January 4 in Hamiota to determine District 3 representatives for the Senior Ladies provincial playdowns in Selkirk on February 7. Midge Horn’s Lenore rink won the A-side and Jean Strachan’s Hamiota rink the B-side, with Horn triumphing 10 9 in the final.

Women’s Support Group meeting in Kenton and Hamiota

In Kenton at United Church 16 women discuss self care with the film Just For Me followed by a talk. The group will alternate venues and meet January 20 in Hamiota at 7 30 with Geraldine Guilfoyle as guest speaker on peace and a Nuclear War on the Prairies film.

Agriculture Minister Leonard Harapiak proclaims February 19 1988 as Women's Institute Day in Winnipeg to honor the institute's role in agriculture home economics health education recreation environment and arts. The WAIM organization dates to 1897 at Stoney Creek Ontario with Manitoba roots in Morris 1910 and now links to the Associated Country Women of the World.
