W I Hold Annual Meeting in Hamiota

Hamiota W I met January 6 with fourteen members. President Mrs Armstrong highlighted 1960s events including Apollo manned moon mission Expo 67 and the assassinations of Kennedy, MLK, and RFK. Treasurer reported 131.28 on hand. Forty five Manitoba Centennial spoons sold. six dozen more ordered. 27 members year average 18.1 attendance. ten meetings held. Red Cross Convenor Mrs Robertson reported 699 sewn items 41 afghans 13 heavy sweaters and 18 light sweaters.

4 H News Hamiota 1969 Highlights To 1970 Officers

At the December meeting 4 H members enjoyed curling and a pot luck supper with invited mothers and the W I Miss Mitchell and the Unit B food girls presented Cleaning Dishes The January 9 meeting drew twenty one attendees The group planned a float and a display board for projects Future speeches were assigned to Doreen McBain Karen Brooks Karen Miller and Sharon Carlson Officers for 1970 were elected President Mrs R Armstrong Vice President Mrs E A Dixon Secretary Mrs J J Ward Treasurer Mrs George Chappell The report lists community giving and library activity and book donations to Winnipeg with 28 paid members and 399 books borrowed in 1969.

Birdtail River S D No 38 Board Meeting Minutes

The Birdtail River School Division No 38 held a regular meeting at Shoal Lake on December 23, 1969 at 8 p m. Trustees Fulton Rapley Butcher Hames Hyndman Waddell Fallon Lewycky attended. Correspondence from Ward Macdonald Partners Manitoba Association of School Trustees Hoffman Construction Public Schools Finance Board Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development discussed insurance amendments grants initial payments.

Chumah Ladies Club Holds January Meeting at Home

The Chumah Ladies Club met January 7 at Mrs. Marlene Andrew s home with seventeen members. Group 1 led worship, annual reports were read, and attendance averaged sixteen with five perfect. Treasurer Bernice Lewis reported 170 20 in bank. readings and a contest followed. minutes from December 11 1969 approved. two bylaw questions on school debentures discussed. meeting continued on back page.

Oakner 4H Beef Calf Club Holds January Meeting

The Oakner 4H Beef Calf Club met January 6 at the McKinnon home. Members planned a $30 raffle and a card night, heard speeches on topics including Bobby Gouchie and Columb us, and assigned next speakers. They reviewed the 4 H Handbook and planned sections three and four for the February meeting. Winners of the Beef Feed report were Sharon Gray first Brent McKinnon second Ross Grey third. The next meeting will be at the Lawson home on February 6.

Centennial Celebration Staged at Oak River

Centennial celebrations on December 31 1969 drew a large crowd around the flag staff at the Junior High School with Frank McPhaden as host. Rev Victor Bowins dedicated the event and Reeve J C Scott read the proclamation before a 4 pm auditorium program and Manitoba toast. Children skated, races were held with winners earning silver dollars and a motorcycle event won by Rapid City.

Barry Moffat Memorial Fund Set Up

Barry Moffat, a 30 year old farmer and noted amateur athlete from the Carroll district, died in a hockey accident during a South West Hockey League game in Souris on December 30. A memorial fund has been established in Souris to aid his wife Jean and their three children Debby, Shane, and Dean, with donations accepted at The Royal Bank in Souris or Caldwell Motors in Hamiota.

Schoolboys Capture Davidson Trophy in Manitoba Bonspiel

Jamie Graham and his rink from Hamiota Collegiate won the Dan Davidson Trophy at the 1969 Manitoba Schoolboy Bonspiel. The event ran December 26 to 30 with 256 rinks and 1024 students across Winnipeg clubs. Final play Monday at Granite Club saw Graham defeat Masniuk of Toulon. Murray Nye of Brandon won the Free Press Trophy.

U C W Holds First 1970 Meeting At Hutchings Home

The Oakner U C W met January 8 with fifteen members and one guest. Mrs. Norman Argue presided, officers were installed by Mrs. Jean Clark, and plans were made to skip July to September meetings unless the executive allows. A China study and devotional were led by Mrs. Routledge and Mrs. Westwood. A church lunch was planned for January 18 at the basement, with attendees bringing their own cups.
