Early Morning Fire Destroys Barn near Hamiota

An early January morning fire leveled a barn owned by Jim Mathison two miles north and west of Hamiota on one of the coldest days. Fire officials report the blaze started likely from an over heated water pump and also destroyed a hen house, sixteen pigs, seven thousand bushels of grain, a tractor, and a manure spreader. The fire endangered nearby granaries but they were saved. insurance partially covered the loss.

Hamiota Marks Centennial With Community Ice Day

A capac ity crowd gathered at the Hamiota Rink on December 31 1969 to celebrate Manitoba’s 100th anniversary. The event featured a performance by the band and majorettes, the lighting of a Centennial Cake by Nancy Fogarty Queen of the Cake, a proclamation read by Elmer Houck, songs by the Glee Club, greetings from local pastors, figure skating, and cake distribution to all attendees.

Agricultural Society Holds Annual Meeting

The Oak River Agricultural Society met December 8 in the Murco Office with a larger attendance. Wendell Wight attended as Ag Representative, Jack Morcom chaired. The group set the annual fair for Wednesday July 6 1970 to align with Blanchard's Homecoming. Secretary Treasurer reported a $695.89 bank balance. Officers for 1970 listed: Jack Morcom President Homer Henry Vice President R. H. Heapy Second Vice Mrs. Doris Henry Secretary Treasurer.

Hospital Centennial Observed With Banquet and Display

The hospital celebrated its centennial on November 29 with a dinner for board members staff and spouses. A Dec 10 Candy Stripers event honored volunteers. gifts tags caps and pins recognized years of service. Proclamation readings and a Manitoba centennial display followed the events with thanks to key organizers.

McConnell 4-H Beef Club Meets December 1969

Twenty two members attended the McConnell 4-H Beef Club gathering on December 30 1969 at the Community Centre. Youths Irene Thompson Dianna Mathison Cam Johnston Dale McConnell David McConnell and Wendel McConnell gave speeches. Mrs Glennis Scott offered judge remarks and shared slides about a Canada Games trip to Halifax and Dartmouth. Calves were weighed December 13 by Wendell Wight with a new best gain competition. Royal Bank trophy donated by Mr Wm Kelly will go to the top gain calf. Next meeting January 13 1970 will feature Clayton Brown speaking about his Chicago trip.

Vesper Service At Oak River Draws Capacity Crowd

Oak River The Oak River United Church recently overflowed as the C.G.L.T. Vesper Service and the Sunday School White Gift Service joined with the UCW Explorers and Messengers for a candlelight event. White Gifts went to Children's Aid in Brandon. Money offerings split between the Sunday School and C.G.L.T. with sends to Canadian Girls Work Board and to the Biafran Fund.

Vehicle Registration Forms Now In The Mail

Manitoba motorists will receive about 420 000 renewal forms starting January 2 for 1969 registrations. Renewals and new validation strips are due by February 28 1970. Centennial blue and white plates may be used in 1970 with centennial plates optional.

Manitoba Consumer Protection Bureau to Begin Operations

Manitoba will activate its new Consumer Protection Bureau on January 2 with a priority on citizen information about rights under consumer laws and the division of federal provincial powers. Minister Rene Toupin outlined cooperation with existing groups, regional offices feasibility, and plans for guidelines on contracts, licenses, and hearings aids.

Bishop Wilkinson Makes First Visit To Parish Across Dioceses

On Sunday December 14 Bishop T. W. Wilkinson of Brandon visited Rev W. D Smiths 3 point parish. At 10 there were two boys and two girls from St Pauls and Miss Judy Pedcastle of Christ Church. At 3 p m the Bishop attended St Lukes Strathclair for Little Helpers Service and Christ Church Annual Meeting is set for Wednesday January 14 in the Crypt. This is your meeting. Get in the know.

Anniversary Celebrated by Decker couple for 50 years

Loy and Elsie Cochran of Decker marked their 50th wedding anniversary on December 31 1969. District ladies hosted a come and go tea at the church basement with corsages for honorees and a backdrop of golden streamers and 50th symbols. A large yellow rose bouquet from Montreal greeting their guests stood to the right.
