On November 27 1971 Randy L Heuven age 14 Forbes St Victoria B C noticed a house on fire and woke 80 year old Mrs Ann E Underwood. Police and fire crews arrived and the elderly resident was rescued. On Christmas Day Mrs Underwood gave Randy a $25 token of thanks.
The UCW met at Mrs. W Thompson's home for a New Year themed gathering. Mrs. Thompson opened with worship and the group decided to hold the congregational meeting in the church and drafted a yearly program. The next gathering is set for February 2 at Mrs. H Paterson's home.
The W I club of Hamiota met January 4 with 18 members. President Mrs Armstrong noted 1971 events including coffee crop failures, a new husband and father Prime Minister, and Minnedosa crowning a woman mayor. Treas urer reported 199.41 on hand and membership set at 1.25. Donations and fund drives included 357 for Cancer Fund and Pennies for Friendship.
Mrs. Lawson demonstrated oil pastels and members used oil and chalk pastels on special paper. Flowers dominated the samples and comments praised the efforts. The next meeting will feature oil and chalk pastels again.
Hamiota Huskies win 8 3 over Angusville in a rare week action. Dick Prawdzik opened scoring at 32 seconds as John Wright Reg Madsen Ron Ramsay and Clint Lawson added later goals. Husbands led 7 2 after two periods before Angusville trimmed to 8 3. Sioux Valley briefly called off game. Next matchups include Shoal Lake Birtle and Erickson as schedule tightens.
Winnipeg report states a new highway section intended to bar farm trucks from transporting farm families to jobs will not be enforced. Attorney General Al Mackling said wording mis reflected act intent and law enforcement will withdraw related charges. Highways Minister Burniak explained how owners can revert plates and return to Farm status without fee. The province will review the law to clarify terms for farm licensed trucks carrying people.
The January meeting of the Y I at Memorial Hall Oak River on January 6, led by Mrs Wm Hedley, drew 15 members. Plans were made for a Community Party January 25 at 8 p m with no admission and guests bring-your-own lunch.
Oak River reports the Figure Skating Club reorganized in December with Mrs Fogarty of Hamiota leading lessons. Officers include President Mrs Jean Hutchings Secretary Mrs Alvina Paddock and Treasurer Mrs Sadie Purdie. The club has 34 members and plans activities including a Western Manitoba Figure Skating Competition in Virden on February 6 and an Ice Show with the March of Dimes.
The column notes that Canadians might rejoice with Poppa and Momma Trudeau on their son’s birth but observes the difficulty for a child born on the same day as Christmas. It laments mail arriving in poor condition and mentions delays when it eventually arrives.
The All Stars senior hockey squad coached by Bill Haggerty and managed by Scott Thompson stands at 7 wins, 3 losses after 10 games. Goalie Brian Bridgeman has one shutout in an 8-0 victory over Strathclair on December 22. Top scorers include Paddock, Thompson, and L Dennison, Joynt, B Haggerty with strong point totals.
A shower in Shoal Lake Ukrainian Hall honored Diane Nykoliation bride elect for January 22. Guests included Philip Keam and Janice Stewart escorting her, with Mrs Paul Keam and Mrs Mason Fiddler among others. Diane thanked guests, invited them to Winnipeg, and sixty ladies enjoyed lunch before the Winnipeg church wedding.
In a short sports note by Mel Smith and Len Nesbitt, Hamiota tops predicted standings followed by Strathclair Oak River Cardale Erickson Shoal Lake and Sioux Valley. Ron Ramsey named top scorer while Lawrence Daniels cited as most penalized.

A new car pet gift by the Senior Women's Guild, a parish council meeting at Shoal Lake, a work bee to insulate the rectory basement, and a Christmas program with youth led worship.
