Senior Citizens Year-end Report at Hamiota Fraternal Hall

The Hamiota Senior Citizens Club held its year end meeting on October 27 with 28 members. Officers for 1971 72 were chosen led by President Mary Ward and Archie Black as Assistant. November 3 10 and 24 featured visitors and a Christmas party with gifts and carols. Lunches were served and 51 people attended the gift draw and box of chocolates from the Municipal staff.

Oakner Beef Club hosts December meeting with plans

Oakner Beef Club met December 14 at Allan Cumming’s home with eight members and three visitors. Seniors plan a fundraising campaign and juniors’ seminar, add a Beef Heifer Project with seven members, and hold a brainstorming contest. Next meeting set for January 11 at Howard McKinnon’s.

The Huskies posted a 5 3 mark after wins over Oak River and Strathclair and losses to Cardale and Russell. Key scorers included Bruce Coombs Chris Hunt and Ron Ramsey with Ramsey leading point totals at 19 while several players faced injuries and transfers affected lineup.

The Birdtail River School Division No 38 board met at Crandall on December 22 1971 at 1 30 p m. Trustees Waddell Butcher Fulton Rapley Hames Lewycky Hyndman Armitage Falloon and elects Clark Mulaire were present. Motions approved including budgeted stage draping at Hamiota and Birtle, bus route adjustments, Gulf Oil bulk fuel tender, November 1971 financials, hiring Strathclair Collegiate teacher Douglas Anstey, and adjournment to January 7 1972.

Amateur Coaches Clinic Draws Skaters From Many Towns

An Amateur Coaches Clinic held in the Arena on December 18 brought sixty skaters from Oak River and nearby towns. Organized by Glennis Scott with Oak River School’s Jim Forsyth and the Oak River Figure Skating Club, the event aimed to train amateur coaches for school skating programs. Pat Ball and Carolyn Rogen led instruction and awards included Amateur coaches and Power Skating badges.

Charity Concert and Sale Disbursements 1971

Records show Children’s Aid Society Brandon received $124.04 with $1401.02 spent for the expenses of the 1971 Children’s Aid activities. An amount of $1276.98 was sent to the Brandon branch for support.

Hoffman Construction Begins District Hospital Renovation

Hoffman Construction Limited arrived at District Hospital on January 3 1972 to begin construction and renovation. A temporary office sits beside the front door and a tool shed rises behind the hospital. A truck load of new lumber has been delivered to the side as three new additions are planned before renovations start. Activity will gain momentum as work advances.

Huskies Goalie Gord Cormack Leads Team’s Strong Net

Gord Cormack, 19, a grade 12 student at H.C.J., is in his fourth year guarding Hamiota’s net. He has played at Kenton in minor hockey and this season shares the goaltending duties with Jones as the Huskies hold 5 wins and 3 losses. Cormack owns a 2–1 record.
