Year in Review and Local Happenings Reflected in 1980 Memories
The year 1980 brought a nursing home elevator and a railroad, major weather swings, fires including Shoal Lake and Medora, train wrecks, and the demolition of the Prince Edward Hotel in Brandon. National events included Lennon’s death and Reagan defeating Carter, with Joe Clark’s brief reign ending as Pierre Trudeau returned. 1981 hopes rise as readers share notes and local tributes.

Winnipeg Jets labeled weak amid scattered notes in rambling column
A collage of quotes and anecdotes spans sports jibes about the Winnipeg Jets, political quips on the NDP and Lyon government, a Chicago judge’s lengthy murder sentence, local holiday events, schoolyard humor, community theatre, church pages, and a detailed fundraising update from the Hamiota area. The piece blends sports, politics, and social notices in a single column.
Canadian constitutional wrangles loom in Trudeau plan
Ottawa notes imagine legal glitches as Trudeau seeks Westminster repeal of the BNA Act and passage of the Canada Constitution Act. A gap before Royal Assent could prompt questions if provinces or local boards refuse to recognize Canada. The scenario raises whether Britain can also enact a Canadian constitution and what a future Supreme Court might decide.
