Renting or Buying a Home A Spring economic debate

The article weighs renting versus buying as spring home activity rises. It notes lower mortgage rates in 1987, advantages of home equity and tax-free capital gains, but warns about overpaying in weak neighborhoods and the need for professional appraisal. It suggests buying within three times gross income, emphasizes down payments and cautious leverage, and contrasts renter benefits with long term gains from ownership. Mr. Mardon of The Investors Group, Winnipeg, is cited.
