Folklorama marks 66th birthday of Oak River Institute

Oak River Institute celebrates its 66th birthday with a Folklorama event by A.C.W.W. members featuring six regional displays East West Central Africa Southern Africa Central and South Asia Southeast Asia and Far East South Pacific and Caribbean South America. Attendees heard talks on poverty health literacy and women’s training plus aid projects including clean water reservoirs and latrines. Donations supported Junior Cooking Pennies for Friendship Moving Fund and related causes. Next events include a 4-H Senior Public Speaking trophy and a Cancer Canvass with March and April activities announced.

Manitoba Legislature to Open Feb 26

Premier Howard Pawley announced the 33rd legislature's second session will open February 26 with the Speech from the Throne. He stressed priorities of jobs farms rural communities and the environment and noted procedural changes including new sitting times from Monday to Friday. The House will be in recess March 20 to April.

Canada to Attend Intl Grain Export Talks in San Diego

Negotiations Break Down Between Birdtail River Board and Teachers

Negotiations for the 1987 collective agreement between Birdtail River School Division and Birdtail River Teachers Association have failed after three meetings. A provincial conciliator is involved as salary is the main obstacle. The board offers no 1987 increase while teachers seek 7.5 percent. Outstanding items include classification changes, administrative allowances, substitute pay, salary payments, sick leave, and settlement of differences. New unsettled items cover hiring and transfers, preparation time, demotion, reassignment or discipline, and layoffs.

Telethon business lights up Hamiota Lions birthday event

Hamiota Lions marked 30 years of community service on January 31 with 100 plus attendees. Inductions added three new members Al Gordon Harry Andrew and Craig Fedorowich taking total to 30. Telethon fundraisers netted 480 with schools and donors contributing 400. District Governor Don Mennie and Deputy DG Tom Speary led the program. Telethon 87 raised about 450000.

Huskies finish second in North Division with 19–8–0 record

The Hamiota Huskies ended the regular season February 11 with 19 wins and 8 losses, placing second in the North Division and earning a first round bye. They will wait for the Melita and Killarney winner, thanking fans for support and announcing playoff posters. Door prizes honored several individuals and sponsors were thanked for the Fan Appreciation Night.
