The Hamiota School Band flourishes thanks to Birdtail River School Division and Band-Parent Committee backing. John Gibson of Brandon teaches 112 students from grades 6 to 12, visiting twice in a six day cycle.
BRSD faces hold on its budget as provincial funding remains unreleased. Superintendent Ron Van Den Bussche said January funding word has not arrived, with a possible Feb week announcement. Feb 11 finance committee meeting postponed awaiting provincial approval before March submission.
Two Hamiota men aged 18 and 19 were charged in Brandon after a Jan 28 break in at a grocery store. Investigations linked them to break ins at Newdale Sandy Lake Kenton Rivers and Winnipeg with nine counts each for break and enter theft and further firearm charges. Police seized stolen items and two unregistered restricted weapons during a residence search by RCMP Hamiota Shoal Lake and Elphinstone detachments.
