European wild boars join Major Bateman’s farm near Kenville

Major Bateman of south of Kenville, Man, has started raising European wild boars after returning to farming in 1988. Six litters are expected before Christmas, adding about 30 piglets with stripes. The stock requires simple wind protection and dry bedding, and is fed mostly grazed forage with alfalfa and grain making up about one third. Meat is low fat with less cholesterol and reduced pan shrinkage, a specialty product. Parliamentary testing of feed and bedding for nitrate levels is being conducted in Portage.
