Hamiota King Farmer event won by Brent Strachan
Brent Strachan of Hamiota won the King Farmer title at the 1988 Hamiota Fair event, with Firmin Desrochers, Allan Smith and Kevin Routledge close behind. Eleven competitors took part in eight events including livestock weight estimating grain bushels and four driving tests. Prizes were donated by local merchants and Oak River Equipment among others. the win earns Brent a trophy and a spot at the 1989 Brandon Summer Fair.

New Manitoba Beef Commission Board Announced
Agriculture Minister Glen Findlay announced a new Manitoba Beef Commission board effective immediately. The board is chaired by Dave Fulton of Birtle, a past president of the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association and former director of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association. Fulton runs a cow calf operation, a grain farm, and a feed lot.

Heart of Gold nominations may top six thousand
More than 5600 nominations were received in the four month Air Canada Heart of Gold Award program run by the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and its member papers. Nominations closed July 31 with judging panels sorting regional recipients. BC and Yukon lead with 1700, Ontario 1200 plus, Quebec near 1000, Atlantic Canada and Alberta over 670, Manitoba 350 plus, Saskatchewan over 300. Final totals expected to exceed 6000. Regional presentations planned for this fall.
