Manitoba grain bill may raise costs for farmers says minister
Manitoba Agriculture Minister Bill Uruski told the House of Commons committee on transportation that Bill C 155 could cost Manitoba grain farmers and the province billions in lost income. He cited a 500 million dollar ten year burden and a rising annual impact by 1993, warning a 10 percent freight ceiling would bite only after rates soar above the Crow rate. He warned the broader agricultural economy, including 2,200 jobs, could suffer with lower grain prices, and argued Crow rate subsidies compare unfavorably with U.S. and EEC subsidies.
