Northern Zone Civil Defence appoints Ivan Mault officer in charge
Ivan Mault of Swan River has been named full time officer in charge of the Civil Defence Northern Zone covering north of Riding Mountain National Park. The three zone system includes Mervyn Dunham in the East and Bernard J. Barnes in the West with headquarters at Portage la Prairie Brandon and Dauphin. The Northern Zone will train volunteers and work with municipalities to handle wartime and peacetime disasters. Mault, born Portage la Prairie and longtime Swan River resident, served in the Royal Canadian Army rising to captain and later the reserve, now plans to move his family to Dauphin.

New Manitoba chemical complex to spark regional plants
Border Chemical Company plans a new Manitoba complex after opening a 50 ton per day sulphuric acid plant in Springfield near Transcona. Two more related plants will start by late 1961, with 200 workers proposed for ore supply. The plant sells acid at 30 dollars a ton, below current regional prices, and will use Alberta sulphur while capable of copper-nickel ore from Bird River. Financial backing comes from Manitoba Development Fund and investors in Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia.
