Southwest A Region Women’s Institute Convention Held In Rivers
The annual spring Southwest A Region WI convention met April 7 1988 at Rivers United Church with 117 ladies present. Highlights included talks by Della Radcliffe and Donna Hastings and reports from Kay Thompson Bernice Still Mae Taylor and regional leaders. Funds raised for Friendship totaled 662.65 with sessions by Rivers Elementary School Choir and plans announced for 1989 convention and 50th anniversary events. The meeting adjourned after installation of the board by Audrey Turbett with Carol Wilson named as regional president elect.

Isabella Doran honors 80th birthday with family gathering
Ina Doran celebrated her 80th birthday April 2 in the Community Hall. Twenty six relatives attended from across Canada and the United States, with 85 at supper catered by the U C W. The event featured a Scotch thistle cake, mauve yellow and white decor, and a large guest list including Archie Duke Kelowna and Beulah Solsgirth.

Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Gary Filmon announced major changes to the Workers Compensation Board. He cited financial instability and abusive claims as key problems and outlined a three pronged plan to remove political interference promote long term claims quality control and curb abuse to restore confidence for employees and employers.

Hamiota Square Dance Club wraps season with pot luck supper
The Hamiota Square Dance Club ended its season on April 14 with a 6:30 gourmet pot luck at the Elementary School. Members from Newdale Brookdale Elgin and Cromer joined for supper. Highlights include a January jamboree led by Paul and Rae Laval and Bert and Irene Higgs. Christmas and Leap Year parties. and frequent federation dances. Officers elected at the annual meeting are President Edward Beamish Vice President Lloyd Bond Secretary Dot Lepine Treasurer Lionel Brown Social Convenors Rosalie Beamish Jenny Dunn Reporter Arnold McPhaden. The club resumes October 19 inviting anyone to join for exercise and fun.

U C W Meeting in April Leads to Tea in October
The U C W held its April 13 meeting with ten attendees chaired by Alice Rudd. The group discussed a supply allocation of used clothing gloves mitts and knitting yarn and approved a tea event in Hamiota for October while reporting a treasurer’s balance of 1917.13.
