Manitoba Announces Voluntary Beef Stabilization Program

Manitoba will spend up to 17.5 million in the first year to aid beef producers with a voluntary contributory stabilization plan. Producers enroll this spring to receive up to 50 per cow, with low interest loans and a beef marketing commission to administer the fund. The six year program aims to insulate prices, expand slaughter cattle output, and stabilize income for cow calf producers, with two support levels and premiums offset by a government grant and fund advances.

The plan includes a loan bill, legislative amendments, and government supervision to ensure growth amid high interest rates and the Reagan era recession. The funds aim to boost economic activity and support Manitoban communities with credit unions representing a major investment pool.
