Kentucky Harlan cases motion for new trial in Shorter case
Attorneys for Mes Catherine Shorter newly convicted in Harlan circuit court for shooting her husband William Shorter filed a motion for a new trial. She is sentenced to 21 years. In Harlan county, William Burnett 40, was sentenced to three years after a jury found him guilty of shooting at Deputy Sheriff Frank White with intent to kill during a fight at Hearts. The shooting occurred a month before the Evarts massacre in which four others were killed. Covington Miss Jayde P Matthews, 79, died at her Woodford Apartments home after a lingering illness. She was daughter of the Inter and Mrs Thomas Matthews, longtime Covington residents. Maysville Warehousing Corp liquidated, auctioning three-day sale: two drying plants and five storage houses sold for a total of 161,100, four-day total 416,400. Covingtonarry Noll, 42, died at Elzabeth Hospital from a skull fracture after a fall. Beulsh Caldwell, 52, wife of Campbell county Judge Alfred M Caldwell, died at home after long illness. In Harlan, five miners who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Hearts battle were sent to the State Reformatory at Fort Franklin. Dowell Assid, Chelex Shadrick and Otto Mills sentenced to four years. Pleas Thomas and Ganzel Banke, a Negro, to three years each. Paducah Mrs Dida Milliken, 34, Princeton, died from injuries in a Benton Paducah auto crash that killed Raymond Strunk and injured Gil Phillips. Routine business was conducted and plans began for the annual chicken supper on a Saturday in November. Candy and baked goods sale added. Winona Tahnaen Nettie Rhodes Olive Noell led supper duties.
