A progressive convention in New Orleans named John M. Parker of Alabama as presidential candidate but failed to place him on the ballot. A New York committee tallies a nationwide strike vote by about 400000 railroad workers on 225 lines. Timothy Shea heads the count and expects an almost unanimous decision to quit work if demands for an eight hour day and overtime pay are denied. Final results will trigger briefings with 600 local adjustment chairmen before a national conference meeting aims to settle the dispute next week.

The Prenton Trading Co gave away beautiful workers prizes won by Charles Denise and Miss Hagel Sloneker. John Bliat conducted business in Cincinnati.
Washington reports show US trade with the Dominican Republic more than doubled in two years. Exports rose from 4.6 million to 7.0 million, while imports and overall commerce grew sharply as American involvement increased. The United States accounted for about eighty percent of the republic's exports last year and provided a large share of its imports, with a notable trade shift as Europe’s trade fell off.

Pillshoreh August 2 Pitts filtration plant at Aspinwall saw police guarding as reports spread that striking and drivers from Pittsburgh street cleaning force were wavering. Several workers failed to report for duty this morning, prompting circulars and discontent. City council refused wage demands, five percent increase denied, public works director Robert discharged workers and hired replacements. Strikers belong to the American Federation of Labor.
