Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden died today at his Mainau Castle on Constance Lake. Born September 9, 1826, he became Grand Duke on September 5, 1856, and married Grand Duchess Louise in 1856. His son Friedrich married Hilda of Luxemburg in 1885 and his daughter Victoria wed Crown Prince Gustaf of Sweden. He was one of the empire’s oldest reigning grand dukes.
Bernhard Bettman, former Cincinnati internal revenue collector, will be reappointed to his old post. He will succeed Herman Cellarius, who took over after Bettman retired for Europe two years ago and has now resigned to head the Clifton Springs distillery.
Cassie Chadwick remains seriously ill in Columbus. Doctors report her heart action weak and stomach troubles continue. Prison physicians state the illness is not feigned and current condition is serious but not critical.

Humane Officer Yerigan mixed dates about Patrick Walsh illness. Walsh lies ill at his daughter Mrs. King’s Hanover Street home and may be moved to Mercy Hospital due to Mrs Kling’s incapacity. No truth that Mrs Kling and her children are in want. Walsh has seven children. Mr Kling works in Pittsburg and sends weekly support.
About two hundred clerks from six railways walked out in Toledo on September 28 demanding a working agreement. More than that number continued at their desks. Organizers plan to seek freight handlers and teamsters to join the strike.

Fire last night destroyed the Dormer Knitting company plant in New Richmond Ohio a three story brick structure. Loss estimated at 35000 with partial insurance. The origin of the blaze remains a mystery. Henry Deough’s residence near the plant caught fire and was partially destroyed.
Elihu Root visited Little Rock on Sept. 28 and stated that President Roosevelt will not be the Republican nominee or seek renomination. He said various regions ask Roosevelt to let his name be placed in nomination, but he will not run.
Under the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Rev. Frederick E. J. Lloyd, former Trinity Episcopal rector who recently joined the Catholic Church in Chicago, will lecture in Smith's theater on the evening of October 9. Dr. Lloyd will undoubtedly give Hamilton the people a treat.

In Paris Kentucky on September 28 Samuel Bagge, a well known farmer, despondent over ill health, placed dynamite in his mouth at his Hutchinson area home and ignited it. The explosion destroyed his house and caused debris to scatter like an abattoir, shaking nearby buildings.
Word from Naples reports the sudden death of Susan E Crawford 74 widow of John Crawford founder of H. S. Pogue stores in Cincinnati. She died in her summer home in Italy on Thursday, per telegrams to her daughter Mrs Henry Voune of Avondale.
In New York on September 28 a car driven by Smelzer in a twenty four hour endurance automobile race at Morris Park crashed through a fence into a crowd. Smelzer and spectator John Clark were fatally injured, twenty others were knocked down or hurt as the tire burst and caused the car to swerve into the fence.
Secretary Taft and Mrs. Taft arrive in Yokohama aboard the Minnesota with Ambassador-designate Thomas J. O'Brien and Mrs. O'Brien. Runners arouse and welcome parties assemble as American flags fly from launches in the bay while the Chattanooga salutes Taft’s war flag at the fore.

Arthur Durham aged 12 and Estell Stewart aged 11 were found with copper bond wires used by streetcar companies aboard a street car Saturday afternoon. They planned to sell the copper to a junk dealer. They claimed Durham found the wire behind a shed on Grand Boulevard.
Rev. Wm. Dunzweiler departs next Thursday to his new post in Batavia and will deliver a farewell sermon Sunday morning. Rev. John Dunzweiler of Dayton will assume duties at the German United Brethren church in this city.
