The Canadian Pacific liner Empress of China sank at her dock in Vancouver after water flooded in over the lower deck. The vessel listed to port and rested on the harbor bottom by eight, with engines and dynamos submerged and flour cargo turning to paste in the hold.
John Russell an elevator operator was killed at the Mallers building in Chicago when he stepped backward into a rising car as he spoke to a scrubwoman on the fourth floor. He fell to the basement and died before help arrived.
In Charleston a miner Leo Antone killed himself by setting off 14 sticks of dynamite in a Fayette mine. After writing to his wife I am tired of you he ignited a fuse and exploded, killing himself and leaving no remains. He lived near Kaymoor and had worked in America long enough to know mining life is harsh.
Philip Sappenstein, a Metropolitan area messenger, received a $6,500 check from the Knickerbocker Trust during a Day and Night bank run. Unable to change the large bills, he attempted to spend them and was arrested when he returned to the bank.
James Smyers of Hamilton passed the state pharmacy board examination and will receive a certificate. R Homer Long of Middletown earned an assistant pharmacist certificate. GEO T Blake.
Senator Beveridge of Indiana says he will support Vice President Fairbanks for the Republican nomination and work for him. He also predicts Colonel William J. Bryan will be the next president unless Theodore Roosevelt is renominated, noting strong Roosevelt support and growing sentiment for Bryan.
Steubenville Ohio October 24 delegates cheer predicted success of county local option and women suffrage in the next legislature. State Senator Duvall and newspapers pledge support. Fremont October 14 Farmers chased Foster Martin Townsend township farmer after he set off dynamite near a school housing 30 pupils taught by Miss Nellie David. He fled before a second blast could be ignited and is now the target of a local search.
Harry Cates suffered an injury to his left eye while unloading coal at the Andersen and Shaffer elevator. Small gravel or coal fragments are embedded in the eyeball, likely destroying sight and necessitating removal of the injured eye.
Pittsburg on October 24 reports improved finances as a five million government deposit steadies local banks. The clearing house states no bank sought aid and overall confidence is restored during the day.
Pittsburg stock exchange remained closed as directors suspended trading for the day amid a flurry in the market. Bankers say the local financial situation is under control and brighter than a week ago despite the Tron City Trust Company receivership and plans for Westinghouse related concerns. A financial figure claims the trust could pay $135 a share to stockholders.

Roy McCurdy five year old son of Charles McCurdy was killed when Herman Marshal of Louisville owned car struck him in New Albany. Driver William Riplinger is held on manslaughter charges. New York reports three small Harlem banks halted operations. The Hamilton bank on West 1251st Street, once led by E. R. Thomas, ceased payments. the Twelfth Ward bank at 125th Street and Lexvivian Avenue followed. Empire City Savings bank also posted payment suspension notices. The events caused little ripple among local finance.
New York stock market opened higher signaling improved tone though overall levels remained low. Traders noted tentative buying and selective gains as investors weighed early moves and mixed economic signals with ongoing uncertainty.

John Koehler of Jolly Street suffered severe burns to the left side of his face when molten iron splashed during a Wednesday shift at the Pxtate Stove works. He was employed there and the incident occurred at the plant.
Shuler filed late today for Abe Adam Santer Millville will and probate. The document transfers all property to Louise Sho, preserving the estate in probate court.
