New York financiers wrestle with separating Mercantile National bank from F Augustus Heinze as nine clearing houses back a $200 000 chacun rescue plan while Comptroller Ridgely weighs a free hand in reorganization. In Chicago a Metropolitan L car derailed at a bascule bridge causing injuries but all passengers escaped.
New York stocks started the day irregular as Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe rose 1 to 794 while Southern Pacific fell to 704. American Smelting dropped 14 to 64, Union Pacific rose to 1151 then slipped, Reading down 1 and Amalgamated Copper fell 2 to 444 in initial minutes.
New York October 19 The New York Clearing House demanded the resignations of the Mercantile National Bank board as a condition of aiding the institution led by former president Frederick Augustus Heinze. Prominent financiers including Charles W. Morse E R Thomas William F Carlton Edward T Jeffery Stanley Gifford Chester Glass O F Thomas Miles M O Brien Dick S Ramsey William Skinner Max H Schultz Seth M Milliken Arthur R Heinze John F Kehoe Warner Van Norden and Benja … resigned.

Washington Oct 19 Comptroller of Currency Ridgely today declined the presidency of the Mercantile National Bank of New York.
Dr Allen McLane Hamilton plans to sue the Thaw family for six to seven thousand dollars for his alienist services in Harry Kendall Thaw case. He may be followed by other experts from Thaw's defense team. Dr C L Dana has a $1500 default judgment for unpaid fees.
Congressman-elect J. E. Harding will award the Annapolis appointment to the top scorer from an examination to be held next Saturday at Middletown High School. Eight applicants compete, three from Middletown. none from Hamilton.
New York Governor Hughes states at a Republican club dinner that he has not sought public office and will not seek to influence the selection or vote of delegates to any convention. He adds there will be no suggestion of influence or reprisal in the executive chamber regarding delegate elections.
BALLOON No. 10, carrying J. C. McCoy and Captain Charles Del Chandler, drifted at about 22 miles per hour from Illinois through Ohio toward Point Pleasant West Virginia. The straight line distance of roughly 500 miles earned the pair the American cup as night fell.
John Hudepohl 63 founder of Hudepohl Brewing Co was thrown from his carriage at Ninth and Main when horses spooked by a passing car. He struck his head on rocks and suffered a bad forehead cut but was not seriously injured and taken to Cincinnati Hospital.

Herbert W. Allen a wealthy diamond importer died at Dock Park hospital from injuries after an automobile skid in Oak Park last night. The car struck a steel trolley pole which snapped and fell on Allen crushing his skull. S. K. Pennington survived with minor bruises.

Cincinnati Oct 19 County Prosecutor Rulison will not present the Elberon avenue accident to the grand jury regarding the Traction company. He cites no Ohio law for criminal charges and plans to seek quo warranto to oust the company for hazardous operations and poor equipment. Motorman Elias Tanning, in charge of the wrecked Elberon car, has been indicted for second degree murder.
Special to the Denver Sun Oct 19 reports a large barn on the Hiram Bridge farm along Four Mile burned last night at 130. Fire origin unknown but headway was rapid, allowing rescue of only one horse. Tenant dom Buckley lost six horses farming implements grain and other property valued around 5000 with 870 insurance.
Report from Transvaal states the grave of President Krazer in Pretoria cemetery was desecrated with his marble bust torn from its base and chipped. Nearby graves including Krawer’s grandchild were damaged. Police increasing patrols after the act, with a reward rumored for the last thief who could not lift the heavy bust.
On a Sivey Johnson farm two miles south of Eau Claire two men blasting stumps turned away as a poodle swallowed dynamite. The dog bit a gray mule. the mule kicked, triggering an explosion that blew the dog to pieces and sent the mule 50 feet. The straw stack and granary were damaged, with windows shattered.

George F. Harding of Chicago filed a bill in superior court seeking the appointment of a receiver for The Standard Oil Co of New Jersey and The Corn Products Co of New Jersey. He says he owns 500 shares of The Corn Products Co. stock and charges Standard Oil controls its management.
The board of elections met all day Saturday to receive bids for printing the November ballots. It fixed next Friday and Saturday as the final registration days. Voters may register at regular polling places from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. New voters and movers since the last election must register. those who registered at the primary need not again unless they moved. Removal certificates will also be issued then.
The body of John Bruck who died in Columbus Thursday night arrived this morning. It will lie in state at his sister Mrs. Carrie Steinle's home at 730 Sycamore street. Funeral services are scheduled Monday at 2 PM with Rev. W. F. Allwardt of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Joseph E. Brate will on Monday succeed Chris Pabst as auditor of Butler County. Following a precedent set by Judge Warren Gard when he was inducted last January, Brate has requested that flowers be omitted.
