The Australian steamer Gintia caught fire in mid ocean last Thursday forcing lifeboats and life rafts to be readied. Smoke filled the ship as passengers and crew faced panic while the hold flooded and provisions ran low. fire caused by spontaneous combustion in the hold was contained after a tense ordeal.
A Nantucket lightship dispatch reports the Lusitania at 11 30 this morning about 90 miles east of the lightship and 193 miles from Sandy Hook. The big liner, averaging 24 knots, is on track to break the time and speed record with a probable pass of the lightship between 3 and 4 this afternoon. Conditions are ideal for the dash home.
The Arctic steamer Frithjof, voyaging with the Walter Wellman expedition, was lost off Cape Langenes Iceland on October 5. The captain and fifteen crew members drowned. The engineer survived by clinging to a drifting plank and reaching shore. The vessel had been damaged by ice and could not withstand the storm.
Milkman Miller of Frechtling Milk Co. went to the police station Thursday morning to report an unidentified thief who has stolen milk for three days from in front of Boettinger's shoe store, causing distress to the family awaiting delivery.
Columbus report states Mrs. Chadwick is dying from nerve exhaustion caused by worry and anxiety. The condition affects her heart and stomach, as diagnosed by Dr. Helmick, penitentiary physician.
Administrators Harry E. Cornthwaite and Leonard Goebel posted a $20,000 bond in probate court this morning for the estate of the late Martin Goebel with F. W. Whitaker and Charles E. Heiser as sureties.

The Presbyterian synod of Ohio elected Dr. Albert Gordon of Toledo as moderator, Rev. John H. Moorehead of Hamilton as clerk, and Rev. Edgar Mc Dill of Madison, Ind., as treasurer. Resolutions endorsed local option in Ohio and Indiana, independent voting in municipal elections, and Sunday closing.
The eleventh annual convention meets in Bourbon County at the new courthouse. A key report states about 4000 of the funds needed for a General John Morgan monument have been raised and recommends placing the monument in Lexington. A 24 member advisory Confederate committee is proposed.
The Preble County Teachers association will convene at the Eaton opera house on Saturday. Foreign speakers include Dr. D. W. Dennis of Earlham and Prof. Francis Gibson Richard of Miami. The program features a round table on grammar for advancing language study and two addresses by Dennis and Richard with a recess and musical interlude.
River boat Tacoma of the Green Line running Pomeroy to Cincinnati caught fire near Kenova Virginia today. Crew fought the blaze and all passengers were safely ashore as the fire was extinguished.
Fire broke out early this morning in Fraternal halls and Hyde block in Spokane between Sprague and Riverside avenues. The blaze is reported beyond control and fears rise for a heavy loss as two of the citys largest business and office buildings burn.
Rome reports the pope has granted a dispensation allowing Princess Marie Bonaparte a Catholic to wed Prince George of Greece who is Orthodox. The condition requires any children from the union to be raised Catholic.
The body of an unknown woman about 35, fashionably dressed, was found in the Chicago river near Halstead street bridge. She is believed to have been murdered and disposed of in the water.
In Washington County Ohio near New Holland the Tarbill farm house owned by Joseph Tarbill burned yesterday. Mrs. Mitchell and her 12 year old daughter were in the garden. The grandmother and three young children Jessie 11 Paul 6 and a three month old baby perished in the blaze. The fire is believed caused by a defective stove flue.
A rumor spread in New York financial circles and at the Waldorf-Astoria that Alexander McDonald of Cincinnati was dying. He was said to be at his Dalvay-on-the-St. Lawrence summer home, but not seriously ill.
Dayton Ohio October report states Mrs Leah Gilman mother of Dona Gilman is seriously ill at the family home on Herman Avenue.
Lucy Bennett of South Bend alleges employer Jerome Lillian forced her from bed to dance in the nude for guests. She says he fired blank cartridges at close range to make her dance faster, disfiguring her face. Lillian has fled the city. the girl is in county jail care.
In Cincinnati Bryan criticizes President Roosevelt's proposed national incorporation of railroads, likening it to Hamilton's centralization. He argues it would expand federal powers at the expense of states and says the plan won’t be accepted, noting opposition from state railroad commissioners and St. Louis attorneys general.
The board approved a 35 foot wide roadway between street coping and curbs, creating a 26 foot central park or market area from Chestnut to Washington. A contract for wire for the electric light plant was awarded.
