State inspector A H Foster testified about a shortage found when C Bauer was city clerk and how Bauer settled with the city to pay the charged amounts. The testimony introduced new features in the embezzlement case against Bauer, the former city auditor.
Washington December 12 President Roosevelt will not run again. A White House statement reiterates the former pledge to decline a bid or acceptance of another nomination, maintaining the stance established after the 1904 election.
The Bauer embezzlement trial progressed with L M Harris the sole witness in Wednesday session. Cross examination by Chase Stewart aimed to show Bauer lacked intent and had aided the inspector, while defense pressed to prove deposits and Treasury orders.
Charles Henry Durland, a Caldwell area farmer, reports his midnight drive halted by a spectral woman he identifies as his wife. She whispers a warning to avoid returning home until morning as danger looms, then a hidden trap with a pistol and string is found in his room. He suspects an old west-side foe.
Mrs. Nicholas Longworth wife of Representative Longworth of Cincinnati had an appendectomy at the White House. Dr Finney of Johns Hopkins led the operation with Dr Sophie Nordhoff Jung assisting. The doctors announced a successful outcome and no danger to her health. President Roosevelt and Representative Longworth were at the scene and expressed relief after the news.
In Monongah West Virginia two hundred eighty five bodies are recovered with twenty five more to surface. The coroner's inquest is slated for next Monday and Governor Dawson will attend to push a thorough investigation aimed at preventing future mine calamities.
In Jefferson Iowa on December 12 D H Breese a 48 year old wealthy farmer killed himself with a gun. He acted after declaring in front of witnesses that he loved a neighbor's wife who did not return his affection. A note on the body stated he could not marry the woman and preferred to die.
Morris Mihalovitch aged 63 president of Mihalovitch Fletcher company distillers died at his home 745 North Crescent Avondale at 9 30 last night after a long kidney trouble illness.
Political leaders nominate Seymour S. Tibball of Franklin as a reform candidate who would clean up muddled Republican politics and secure a Washington seat. A Foraker supporter, Tibball favors harmony and a single convention with one set of delegates. he edits the Franklin Chronicle.
Joseph H. Snyder chief clerk in State School Commissioner Jones office announced he would seek the Republican nomination for school commissioner at the upcoming convention. A Ws Corman Medina county excise clerk in the auditor of state office also announced his candidacy for state auditor.
New York December 12. E H Harriman is suffering from a cold and has not been at his office since Monday. A report of serious illness was denied at his office. It was added that he has a cold and is taking care of himself.
Elenor Hall, two, in Eaton Ohio, survived after a bottle of medicine spilled on the floor. The family dog lapped the liquid and died, while the child remained unharmed, prompting relief from Mr and Mrs W G Hall.
William H. Miller on trial for the murder of Joe Litteler was declared insane by Dr. Beebe of Ohio Medical College. The examiner testified Miller was insane at the time of the murder and remains insane. Defense rested. rebuttal witnesses testified Miller appeared sane on the day and after incarceration.
Firefighters from The Threes Fours and Fives extinguished a small blaze at 607 Buckeye Street, caused by a defective flue, burning a roof hole around the chimney. The department was alerted at 12 30 today.
Goldfield Nevada December 12 The Mo Hawk combination mine resumed operations this morning with fifty six men present. Incidents of molestation against workers and union pickets were not strongly evident. No other mines attempted to reopen this morning.
The Democratic National Committee met in Washington to choose the next convention venue. Denver leads with a $100,000 cash bid, Chicago offers expenses and about 25,000, Louisville proposes expenses, while St. Paul and Atlantic City also bid amid fundraising strains. Cleveland’s Tom L Johnson has withdrawn. The committee will vote after adjournment with a separate resolution urging publicity for campaign contributions.
Following reports of night riders mobilizing miles from Hopkinsville Kentucky residents were sworn in to guard the town. Gov Wilson ordered troops from Burlington to arrive. no attack occurred and the tension eased after their arrival.
Omaha reports construction begins on the Lane cut-off of the Union Pacific. Two hundred fifty men start work, marking the first actual construction resumed on Harriman lines after a financial downturn.

At the twenty-seventh annual meeting of the International Federation of American Homing Pigeon Fanciers in Boston Fred May of Minneapolis received the best record for the year for Tornado a 600 mile flight in fifteen hours. Dr John Schifling of Ek Wayne Ind credited with a second flight of 1000 miles in forty seven hours.
Boris Serafoff, famed Bulgarian rebel chief in Macedonia, was shot dead at his house in Sofia by a Macedonian assailant. Another revolutionary leader Garvanoff was killed as he bade Serafoff farewell. Serafoff, noted for uprisings against the Turks, led Aedonian forces in 1903 and is linked to the Miss Stone kidnapping inquiry.
Butte Montana December 12 The East Helena division of the American Smelting and Refining company announces it will resume buying all custom ores. This will restart many Montana mines closed as the smelter refused to accept ore except under contract.
