O Campbell defeats A Piper in straight sets 6-2 6-1 to win the men's singles. Lola Campbell wins the women's singles defeating Mrs McIntyre 6-2 6-4 with strong early rounds and close semi finals noted in the club championship results.
At the Guyra Club monthly meeting four tickets for the Davis Cup tie were announced and a ballot among club members was resolved. A 20 player match featuring 12 men and eight women is set for October at Guyra. President Mrs B Smith noted junior member Don Jackson attended the Glen Innes coaching school.
The Guyra Tennis Club held an American tournament in two divisions. Division A featured Newberry and Mrs Jack son 53 over O raise and Miss P Brazier 52, with Crampton and Mrs Foster 44 and others. Division B list includes D Prazier and Miss M Pearson 22 and a tie in Second Division between Don and Miss L Jackson and T Wells and Miss L Campbell, with a playoff deciding the winner.
Warmer weekends bring fragile bowlers to join hardies as pennant matches start next Sunday with Armidale visiting Guyra. Teams listed include Archibald Brodie Roberts Culla and McMillan Wheaton Cockburn Davidson plus Whiteford Moore Parsons Fludson Miller B Smith Audson Miller Pryor. Rudd defends Saunders Cup against Rev Hiscox. Rudd and Cummings drew with challengers Davidson and Wheaton. Rudd to face Hudson and Hill next Saturday.
Water levels are dropping at Guyra Golf Club and the southern end should be usable within weeks. A working bee is set for next Sunday at 9.45 a.m. all members should attend with tools to begin work around the club house and greens outside the boundary. Heighton Williams won the Glen Innes afternoon trophy, with return visits promised by visiting clubs.
Guyra women travel to Armidale for an A grade draw with Old Students and a 5-1 win over Richardsons. Noleen Mather scored a perfect goal from ten metres, with Beryl Cameron and Pat O’Donnell among outstanding players. Inverell to visit Guyra next Sunday. Guyra A grade lineup listed.
The Central School faces the Youth Club at the Recreation Ground next Saturday with play starting at 2 pm. Teams listed include School players J Cullen Mitchell Kirk Gilmour Cook Start Parsons Johnson and club players Campbell Hincox Gerew Williams Mitchell Hayden Hiscox Taylor Ditton.
