Charles Wark of Black Mountain won first prize with a yield of 18 tons 1 cwt per acre in the 1945 Junior Farmers potato growing championship. Second went to Don Drabsch of Guyra with an estimated 23 tons 16 cwt per acre.
Mr D H Drummond M L A was told by Lands Minister that 130 large estates are being assessed for soldier settlement. Proclamations issued on 60 properties, 58 topographic surveys done, with many estates likely to be purchased or resumed by the Crown and subdivided for service men. Perpetual tenure with rent at 21 percent of farm value, interest 4 percent, £750 for a farm residence, and a one year living allowance during allotment may be provided subject to Commonwealth conditions.
Twenty Junior Farmers were selected to visit Lis-Mote last week for the victory exhibition. Of these, Lee Kirk and Bill Wark from Guyra were chosen as part of the group.
The Leader of the Country Party accuses Army authorities of cruelly demanding refunds of allotments paid after a man’s death in Japanese captivity. Widows, told years after official death notices, face demands or loss of deferred pay, while pension may replace the refund.
Notice outlines required qualification certificates for intending serviceman settlers under the War Service Land Settlement Act 1941. It notes submission of 21 estates to the Commonwealth for land settlement, with Commonwealth concurrence on 11 estates and related actions by the Lands Authority.
