Imperial Beach Sailor Wins Navy Commendation Medal
Second Class Richard De Dewra, husband of Anita Gettler of Yale Town, earned the Navy Commendation Medal from Commander AK Fueser at Naval Air Station Imperial Beach California. He was cited for heroism as a helicopter crewman aboard the USS Ranger, saving the life of teen Navy Petty Officer Second Class Downing. Dewra is a 1965 Guthrie Center High graduate and attended Iowa State University in Ames.

Davids Creek flood plan eyed for recreation lake
The Town Conservation approved a $6 million flood control and recreation reservoir on Davids Creek north of Extra. Col Billy P Pendergrass said the 808 acre lake will aid southwest Iowa, with four parks around the site and flood protection downstream to Atlantic. Construction to begin before late summer 1974, finishing about three years later, with a 12 to 1 benefit to cost ratio.
