County Schools Back In Black With State Aid

Guthrie County schools received about 17.39 percent of total state equalization for the 1971-72 year. Each district got roughly 17.39 percent, about four percent more than last year, totaling 115246 dollars versus 93538 previously. Next equalization aid due in December.

Two Guthrians Named in Clarinda Singer Group

Iowa Western Community College at Clarinda announced sixty singers in the Siners of the Royal Blue. Included are Wanda Betts and Diane Jorgensen, both Guthrie Center residents, as daughters of local couples. Nelson E Crow is director founder of the singer group.

Aid Grants Lowered Next Year

The Iowa State Scholarship is cut from 800 to 610 for the next year to stretch funds. A $525,000 appropriation for 1971-73 supports about 300 freshmen at Iowa colleges with renewals for sophomores only. Four to five thousand applications are filed annually with the Higher Education Facilities Commission for State of Iowa Scholarships.

Adair County fund sale aids hospital equipment drive

The Ladies Care League sponsored a White Liver sale raising about 195 dollars to support Curonsis Care equipment for Adair County Memorial Hospital. Ernest G Woodemeyer, district rep for Aid Association for Lutherans, completed five Gates of service and earned the Fraternal Insurance Counselor designation. Basacd Lions hear from District Governor Gerald Maharey, a Clearfield Lions Club member. Larry Laker plans Baker's Paint Store grand opening through October 28 with specials and prizes. Ed Bennett at Panora Council claims area law enforcement uses the “sucker game” to press charges. A Stuart art show set for October 31 at 5 x 80 Country Club from 1 to 3 pm. Little Miss Stuart 1972 is Michelle O'Brien, who will compete in Little Miss Iowa in Fort Dodge.

Guthrie County Extension Council appoints committees in eight townships for fall elections beginning in November. REC District Elections Set List Candidates

Kenneth Saltsgaver announced that three directors will join the REC board for three year terms. The seats cover Maine districts. current terms expiring include Paul McCool district five, Oris Hoover district four, and Marvin Rochholz district six. Elections are set for November 17 Seeley township hall, November 22 REC building, and November 18 Case community hall.

Redfield Youth Charged After Stop Sign Crash

Patrolman Bill Springer said Kemmeth Maras of Redfield ran a stop sign and slid into a ditch near the Werrishore Cemetery causing about 300 dollars damage to his 1964 car. Charges are pending. A second incident east of Panora at about 6 am involved Max Benton of Guthrie Center and a semi driven by Ernest Barnes of Redfield. Benton’s car sustained 400 to 500 dollars damage with no injuries reported.

County Road Work Contracts For 62 000 Let

County engineer Bill Stone announced two road projects in the county totaling over 362 000. Bassett Construction Co. of Casey bid 333 642 for 2 121 miles of passing from the north city limits of Menlo north, to connect with county blacktop. K S Eramine Co of Des Moines won the bridge widening contract east of Yale, near the Dallas county line, raising a 20 foot span to 30 feet, funded by the county road use fund. The project cost 28 146 with bids from 28 146 to 32 99.

Over Drying Corn Cuts Costs for Farmers

Iowa State University Extension economist Rob Wisner warns against over drying corn and advises reducing moisture to about 15 percent for storage. Drying to 13 percent or lower adds shrinkage and costs, with each point of moisture removal costing roughly one and a half cents per bushel. some farmers go as low as eight to ten percent, risking extra costs.

Canvass by Junior High Youth for CROP Saturday

Guihne Center junior high youth canvass the community for CROP on October 30 at the Christian Church at 6:30. They will collect canvass boxes then return for a light supper and a treat. The united effort involves churches Guthmnen Center and area youth groups to transport and participate to aid hungry and refugee families through CROP.
