Earl Roberts, after 18 years in five prisons, urged junior and senior high students to cultivate self confidence and care for others. He warned against thinking “it will never happen to me,” and urged lasting change through self reminders and studying happy people.
A jury of five women and seven men returned a guilty verdict after about three hours of deliberation in the Culbertson hit and run case. Sentencing is set for November 1. James Edward Culbertson faced a maximum penalty of $500 or one year in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal accident that killed 16 year old Mark Winters, son of Archean Winters of Yale.
STUART-Vo Mallors was elected president for the United Tond meetias plans. The Guthre Center Cub Scout Pack hosts a new Cub Scout round up at 7 30 PM at the elementary school cafeteria on Monday October 18. Open to boys eight to ten with a fifty cent monthly dues and a one dollar enrollment fee.
Former central school teacher in Des Moines won the Guthman football contest prize of 50 million dollars. Ron Rattan correctly predicted two games and tied for second with Pro Don Reeves who also hit two games. Reeves earned 3 million dollars for his placing.

Residents in the Panora Landen district circulate petitions asking the school board to hold a special election on a bond issue of 875000 to fund a new six through 12 grade school bus barn expansion. The petition notes the project would take effect as part of a taxable property value. Weeks earlier the P-L school board hired a Sioux City architectural firm to design a new school building.
The Iowa State Commerce Commission ruled Panorama Utilities a Mid Iowa Lakes subsidiary is subject to rate regulation for its water service at Lake Panoram a. It required charges for all landowners, connected or not, as the project plans 1500 homes and up to 17 thousand residents over five years. The decision cites public utility standards and the need to regulate vital water services.
The city council decided months ago to surface the airport runway with rock and salt to improve all weather use. The new surface will be funded from the airport fund though an exact cost was not available.
The county opened six bids Thursday October 14 for culverts on a proposed road two miles north of Mento. The contract went to low bidder Moore and Jensen Inc Perrys at $20. The project totals $2627026 and work will start soon.
A Harlan man joins Beidelman Funeral Home as a licensed professional. Barbara and their 11 month old daughter Andrea moved here from another area and will reside at the funeral home.
Services for Esper V Bullard 55 of Ogden were held Monday at 10:30 am at Beidelman Funeral Home in Panora with interment in Brethren Cemetery. Rev W B Brant officiated. Bullard, a former Panora resident, died Saturday morning at University Hospital in Iowa City after six weeks as a patient. He had been hospitalized intermittently for two years. Survivors include one son Garry of Sioux Falls SD, one grandson, and one brother Kenneth Bullard of Panora.
Postmaster Stewart Schwab was elected national vice president at the 67th annual Postmasters convention in Anaheim California on October 27. The St Louis region including Ankeny Iowa and Massouri Missouri elected him to a two year term as director.
The Guthrie Center Educea hon Association sponsors an open house for the Guthrie Center Community School as part of American Education Week.
