Area youths expressed interest in joining Guthne Center swimming this summer and are urged to attend a meeting Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at the local school. Swimmers will select new suits and be measured for them, with new jackets available. Orders must be placed now to ensure June delivery, and those unable to attend should contact Mrs Jack Dixex Guthne Center.
Voters decide five new directors for the Stuart Menlo school district as polls open at noon in five precincts. Twelve candidates seek seats across five districts with election closure at 8 pm and district treasurer candidate Carl Belden named.
The Guthrie Center Lions club extended the final deadline for ordering replacement trees from the Dutch Elm disease program. Residents have until this weekend to order from Dave May at the Extension Service or through any Lions member. More than 20 varieties and sizes are available, with option to plant or have planting done for a small fee.
Van Cline of Menlo is among 24 students admitted to the Honors program at Iowa State University. The program allows individualized study plans and waives certain required courses to support high scholastic standing and tailored learning paths.
Stuart volunteers at the town hall elected Fire Chief Donnelly 1st Assistant Bench 2nd Assistant Small 3rd Assistant Robie Eversall and Secretary Treasurer Casey. The event sets leadership through the next biennial period.
Tint Hoff and Mark Palmer set out for a famed fishing hole amid excitement and dreams of a world record catch. As hours passed no fish appeared and boredom grew until Mark finally hooked a fish, while Tint reacted with amazement and disbelief.
County reports 1586 farms signed for the 1971 feed grain program with 877 farms in the county participating by April 9. Orange township leads with 98 percent and Valles close behind at 97 percent. Earlier goals aimed for 90 percent amid shifts in acreage limits and planting rules.
February traffic toll fell to 266 deaths, 62 fewer than the prior year’s two months. Poor weather with fog, snow, and ice limited travel, while daylight crashes caused 25 crashes with 20 deaths and five fatalities after dark. Several days saw ice and glare on roads, contributing to the toll.
Guthrie County Legion and Auxiliary plan a Stuart gathering April 23 at the town hall. The meeting begins at 8 pm with all members urged to attend. Commander Bernard Cortigan of Carroois and Auxiliary President Mrs Louise Branson head the county unit.
Gas price war tightens across Guthrie Center as major stations cut prices by 2 to 3 cents per gallon. Regular gas quotes hover around 30 cents with minis at 28.9 cents and premium near 33.9, while full service stations ask higher. The trend, sparked by mayoral actions, says the war may continue with several operators optimistic about further reductions.
Twelve new members will be installed in the National Honor Society at Guthrie Center High School on Wednesday April 21. Principal Glen Hunerdosse notes candidates must have a B average after five semesters and be in attendance for at least one semester, then be voted on by the faculty based on service leadership and character. Parents are invited to attend the ceremony and a tea follows.
Springbrook State Park announces group cabins open for large organized camp outs. The nine cabins plus mess hall, staff quarters and meeting hall accommodate youth and non youth groups with rates from 75 cents per person daily for youth groups to at least 7 dollars per cabin plus 25 dollars daily for other facilities. Water, cots, mattresses and sanitary facilities provided. Information available from the park conservation officer at Springbrook.
The park commission completed another improvement by planting various shrubs along the east side and south limits of Mitchell Park near Highway 44. Officials say the diverse plantings will ensure blooms year round, enhancing park beauty.
Youngsters enjoyed a lively weekend at the city park with romp and play sessions. Local families reported sunshine, games, and community camaraderie as children explored playgrounds and open spaces.
Iowa restaurant effort titled Coffee Day supported the Association for Retarded Children with 151.79 dollars. Several Guthrie county high school seniors will receive awards worth 75 per semester for two semesters starting next fall at Northwest Missouri State College. Awards honor outstanding academic, extracurricular, and leadership records. Recipients include Terry Young Adair Judith Dal linger Kathleen Hackett YJB Jacquee Dickey Dennis Cutler William McCarty Melodee Menefee Suzette Millhotlin Nancy Ocheltree Cindy Mikkelsen all of Guthrie Center.
Ricks and Sabet Covault Builders announce the construction of a home on North 13th Street starting Tuesday morning. The work is expected to take only a few hours and includes planning and heating in the unit. Persons are invited to watch the assembly as it proceeds.
Five Central students at Guthine Center in Pelia earned second term Dean's Hat honors for a 3.3 GPA or higher across at least three courses. Named are Emily Neal Cathy Readinger Scott Gonsales Tim Destoa and others among 335 honorees.
