Thirteen candidates filed for Stuart-Mento Community School District Board of Education seats in five director districts. Incumbents Gene Livingston Floyd Faust H E Morrison Jr and Robert Purviance hold current posts. Carl Beldon seeks district treasurer. Weekend Accidents Reported In Guthrie County Weather Causes Two Crashes

Guthrie County sheriff reports a quiet weekend with no accidents except two Thursday incidents on 141. Patsy Moore of Bayard slid into a ditch due to ice half a mile east of Bagley, causing $150 damage to a telephone line. A few minutes later Laura Deventer of Coon Rapids lost control in snow and wind a mile east of Bayard, ending with her car on its top. no injuries or charges.

Hog Price Outlook Reads Pressure Amid Seasonal Hog Volume Rise

Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell says hog prices face extreme pressure in April and May as farmers prepare a volume 20 percent above last year. Market prospects favor steady hog movement to market at moderate weights, but spring field work will cause uneven daily marketings and sharper price swings as weather and field conditions bite. Farmers may plant corn early to curb blight risks.

1971 Highway Maps Ready for Distribution

County residents are urged to pick up the new 1971 official highway map from state highway commission offices and sheds or highway patrol members. Saving funds by avoiding mailing costs is emphasized as over a million maps were distributed last year and bulk deliveries are underway statewide. The 1971 map includes 1970 census figures delayed until January.

Lions Club offers tree replacement in Guthrie Center

Guthrie Center Lions sponsor a tree replacement program offering more than two dozen varieties at reduced prices to residents. Trees may be bought and planted or planted for a small extra fee. Elm trees were removed from city property after Dutch Elm disease, with nearly 200 removals in the past two years. For information contact Dave May at the Extension office or any Lions Club member.

Rasmussen Rites Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran

Elida V Rasmussen age 70 died Wednesday at Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center. Services were conducted at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Donald Lutz. Burial followed in Union Cemetery. Surviving daughters are Mrs Logan McCool, Mrs Frank Brooks, and Mrs Russell Vernon. Sons include Bert Goodwin, Lewis Soldotna, Gene Paramount, and Kenneth Des Moines. Also three sisters and three brothers are listed as survivors.

$100000 Suit In Tractor Case Nine Day Trial

A $100,000 damage suit against Art Miller and Tri County Implement of Bagley was settled after a nine day Guthrie County jury trial. Lawrence Edgington claimed the tractor he bought from Miller and Tri County was faulty and caused injuries. The jury found all defendants guilty, assigned Edgington court costs of $198.10, and awarded Miller $863 for a counterclaim.

Two Menlo Men Get 30 Day Jail Terms

Robert Leisener of Menlo received a 30 day sentence after a Friday hearing in S E Robinsons Justice court. He faced disturbing the peace charges tied to an incident at a Menlo resident’s home and a truck stop near Stuart. Leisener was arrested by Sheriff Lester Petersen after the Stuart marshal provided his location, and a 22 caliber revolver found on him will be turned over to Adair authorities on weapons charges. An 18 year old Menlo youth, Jim Alliss, was sentenced to 40 days for larceny after pleading guilty to stealing gasoline and began serving immediately.

Guest Speaker For ARC Meet Set For April 14

The Association for Retarded Children will meet April 14 at the Guthne Center elementary building. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Henry Warner, a field representative of the IARC, will present a film titled An Introduction to the Mentally Retarded. The event is open to the public.

Northern Natural Gas pays Guthrie County tax bill

Guthrie County treasurer received a 737,674 check from Northern Natural Gas for the first half tax bill. Second half taxes due before October 1. Northern's total state tax is 4,880,539 with 71 of 99 counties affected. Iowa districts receive 64 percent, towns 8 percent, and counties 28 percent. Tax rise from last year totals 15.3 percent.
