Democratic Convention Nominates Polk After Ballots
The 1844 Democratic National Convention convened in the East and West, voting through nine ballots to nominate James K. Polk of Tennessee for president. The delegates debated the two thirds rule, party unity, and the selection of a vice presidential candidate Silas Wright of New York. The final vote declared Polk the unanimous nominee and Wright as vice president designate with resolutions reaffirming party principles.
