First county common school commencement held here
Hundreds gathered Saturday afternoon at 1 30 to witness Decatur county’s first common school commencement. The 113 graduates from Adams, Jackson, Sandcreek, Clay, Marion, Fugit, Saltcreek, Clinton and Washington counties received diplomas as Erdmann orchestra played. Superintendent Fields introduced Rev Joshua Stansfield of Indianapolis who delivered the class address urging public schools and moral character. Miss Adelaide Baylor presented the diplomas and offered closing advice.

Market proprietor nets season's largest catfish
Carl G. Wolfe, owner of the focal meat market, caught a six pound catfish last Friday while fishing south of town. The lifelong angler reported an eighteen inch specimen described as extra large for Flatrock waters near the area.

William E Adams died at his son Frank Adams home at 620 East Washington on Wednesday night June 5 at 11 30 He leaves a wife a son and three daughters The Ohio born man 1849 lived in Clarksburg Greensburg Athens Alabama before returning here last month to recuperate His funeral was held in Athens Saturday.

New Church For Milroy Planned With Noted Bid
The contract for the new Presbyterian church in Milroy was awarded to Ray Stroke for 9649 dollars. The building features a basement with rooms including a 10x26 kitchen and 25x30 dining area, and a first floor with an auditorium, Sunday school room, and seven classrooms. Red brick trimmed with white brick and Bedford blue stone will be used, with a cement foundation and glassy faced rock upon cement walls.

Fast Horses At North Vernon Fair Grounds
The North Vernon fair grounds host expanding horsemen activity with fourteen horses already on site and two more strings expected next week. Aged Resident Dies at Home on Poplar Street
Mrs. Sarah Runner aged eighty five sister of Simon McCullough died at her home on Poplar Street Wednesday evening about eight oclock. A fall two years ago confined her to the house and bed for months. She leaves two daughters and funeral services are set for Friday at 2 oclock at Cross Plains near her old home.

Davis Freed After Jury Acquits Local Defendant

Boys Had Narrow Escape at West Main Crossing
Frank Russell and Walter McCoy escaped injury when their car stalled on West Main street at the Michigan division tracks Sunday afternoon. A freight train backed down, the car was hit and crippled though repairable, and the crossing is noted as dangerous when unguarded at night.
