G E Stephenson announces the 1961 Green and White annual staff at Greene High School with Donna Reed as editor and Kay Wiegman as assistant editor. Jane Kretzschmar is business manager, and committees include advertising chaired by Rita Kepple, art chaired by Sharon Andrews, features chaired by Carol Crosby, photography chaired by Jeanette Lindell, sports chaired by Larry Gabe, and subscriptions chaired by Leanne Nielsen.
More than 400 attendees are expected at the Third District Fall Conference in Tama on September 19. The event gathers the American Legion and its Auxiliary for a one day and evening program with registrations at 8:45 am. Legion sessions convene at the American Legion Hall and Auxiliary meetings at the Methodist Church, with lunch served in the same church. Orville Maifeld of Iowa Falls, district commander, presides over Legion activities, while Mrs. E. C. Chamberlain of Waterloo, district president, leads Auxiliary sessions.
John Earsland, 55, arrested by Parkersburg police on September 6 on intoxication charges. He pled guilty in J. P. Court in Allison and was sentenced to 15 days in the county jail.
Bob Shultz of Greene is named director of activities at the Greene Community Center effective immediately. About 75 teens gathered Friday for dancing and refreshments after the football game. Upcoming events run through October with Youth Center sessions and various clubs. center use requires a request to Bob Shultz and a contribution to cover lights and cleaning.
Thieves broke into the Packard Elevator southeast of Greene on Friday evening September 9 and carried away twenty five cartons of assorted cigarettes. The Butler County Sheriff's office is investigating.
The Gallagher for Congress committee announces a fund raising barbecue and political rally at the Nashua fairgrounds on Sunday September 18 starting at 1 30 p m Governor Herschel Loveless chair of the National Democratic Farm Advisory Council will headline. The committee says they are in contact with the Democratic National Committee about another national speaker QC J Keiper is general chairman and tickets are distributed through campaign workers in all fourteen counties of the Third District.
Mrs Clyde Stuntz defeated Mrs Robert Curtis in the final to win the Ladies City Golf Tournament. Consolation honors went to Mrs Richard Wag oner for the weekend match play.
The Greene Public Library Summer Reading Club wrapped up on September 1 with 76 children participating and a total of 883 books read. Top readers included Charles Bone with 39 books in the 1st-2nd grades, Jean Shultz with 28 in 3rd-4th, and Patti Bachman with 45 in 5th-6th grades.
Chief Warrant Officer Eugene D. Shafer of the U S Air Force and his wife visit parents Mr and Mrs George L Shafer with sons Eric and Dennis. He returns from a three year Europe tour stationed in Germany and Spain after completing 20 years of service last December and is reassigned to Empire AFS Michigan.
The Hoofbeats Drill Team hosted the Fourth Annual Horse Show with entries from Dumont Charles City Osage Winterset Mason City Marble Rock Janesville Finchford and Greene. Winners include Junior Horsemanship Douglas Jewell Greene and others across events such as Men s Western Pleasure Pair Class Pole Bending and Obstacle Race with multiple placements and trophies awarded.

Rambler football fans saw strong West Union defense and early mistakes by Greene as the hosts shut out the Ramblers 12 to 0. Ronald Beerman led the visitors with two rushing touchdowns despite Greene’s efforts to mount an offense late in the game.
Greene Fire Department extinguished a basement fire at Earl Chapman’s home on North High Street Monday at 3 PM. Investigators believe hot ashes contacting a cob pile started the blaze.
Raymond Leo Dolan, died about 3 30 pm Wednesday after being run over by a tractor on his parents farm two miles west of Roseville. He was son of Mr and Mrs Adrian Dolan of Marble Rock. Survived by his parents eight siblings and grandparents. Funeral at St Marys Church Roseville with burial in St Marys Cemetery. Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mr and Mrs Warren Hollingsworth and Esther returned Friday from a nine day trip to Colorado Sightseeing in Colorado Springs included visits with Mrs Hollingsworths sister and husband Mr and Mrs Henry Upton and the Morey family Ruth Miler of Allison and Arlene Samford of Lincoln joined them on the western tour They also visited at Denver with Hollingsworths nephew Mr and Mrs Bernard Dravis and family

The Woman's Club will hold an open meeting in the high school auditorium on Tuesday evening, September 20 at 8:00. Guest speakers are Republican Representative H R Gross running for re election and Edward J Gallagher Jr of Waterloo Democratic candidate for the U S House from the third district. Vernon Larson, Butler County Auditor, will demonstrate the voting machine. Members meet at 7:15 for a business session.
Walter Gabe and Bruce V Andersen were re elected to the school board and Verle E Barth was re elected treasurer at the election held Monday. Fifty voters cast ballots as there were no opposing candidates and no issues. Andersen received 50 votes, Gabe 43, Barth 43 for the short term and 44 for the two year term. Elmer Bramer, not a candidate, received one write in vote for each treasurer term.

Bruce Marsh returned to camp on Tuesday September 6 for San Diego California after a nine day furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh and family. He completed a radar study course at the United States Naval School Radarman class A Treasure Island San Francisco and has been promoted to Petty Officer Third Class. He will serve aboard the U S S Malala performing radar work with his new address listed as Bruce M Marsh O Division U S S Malala C O F P O San Francisco California.
Visiting sister Mrs. Marcella Densmore of Long Beach California is visiting in the home of her sister Miss Josephine Feyereisen.
Brownie Scout program begins September 20 with grade based troops led by Mrs. Litterer Curtis Raisty Starkweather and others. Third and second grade groups meet 4:00 to 5:00 at various locations including the youth center home and City Hall to learn about being Brownies and community service.
