More than 400 members of The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary are expected to meet at Doens when the Third District holds its annual Fall Conference on Monday September 10. The district includes Benton Blackhawk Bremer Butler Franklin Grundy Hardin Marshall Tama and Wright counties. Ray Formanek district commander will preside and Mrs Dale S Baird district president will lead auxiliary meetings. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. Legion in Legion Hall Auxiliary in Presbyterian Church.
The first Butler County Junior Cattle Feeders Show is scheduled for next Tuesday September 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Apling ton Sale Barn. Five 4-H members will exhibit pens of three to ten head with cattle started before March 15th and sold on grade and yield after the show. Awards hinge on price margin rate of gain feed efficiency and management practices. a trophy provided by the Butler County Beef Producers Association will go to the member with the highest project points.
Mr and Mrs Don Rover spent a few days in South Dakota last week visiting Mrs Rover’s brother and sister in law Rev Henry Flessner and Mrs Flessner at Lake Andes.
Heavy rainfall of 6 to 9 inches in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota caused the Shell Rock River to overflow its banks in Greene on Friday. The crest reached seven and a half feet above the dam top, three feet below the 1961 record, as towns along the river experienced flooding from Mason City to Albert Lea. Water backed into basements and the dry run behind St Mary’s Church, flooded Perrin Park, and a house boat near Gates Bridge broke free and crashed over the dam.
Evan L. Wilson of Waterloo pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated first offense in district court on September 1. He paid a total of 816 dollars after a July 14 arrest near Parkersburg. Edward Hemmen of Jesup also appeared on September 1 for a first offense and paid 316 dollars total after a July 21 arrest on Highway No. 3 near Shell Rock.
Howard Calease is listed as a patient at University Hospital undergoing treatment for a lung ailment.
New residents welcome three newborns at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. David William, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimine, born Saturday September 1 weighed 38 pounds 4 1/4 ounces. Brenda Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Cassmann, born Friday August 81 weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce and has three brothers Dennis Douglas and Bruce. Joan Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Schafer, born Monday September 3 weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces and has four brothers Don Gary Phillip and James.

Jerald Duane Pals of Rockwell Iowa appeared in District Court on September 1 and pleaded guilty to larceny. He was fined $50 and ordered to pay $26.40 costs plus $210.00 as his share of fireworks stolen from Dumont in July 1961.
Mrs. Paul Shafer departed Monday for California to be with her son Elroy Lovell who is hospitalized in Santa Barbara due to illness.
The Winnebago Council Boy Scout Leaders Showando returns to Winnebago Scout Reservation near Marble Rock Iowa on Sunday September 9. Ray V. Bailey and Al Moon say it will be a full day of training for adults with inter patrol demonstrations rope making knot tying fire building first aid and campfire cooking plus a civil defense display by Jim Francis and others.
The regular school board election for Greene Community School District is scheduled for Monday September 10. Voters may cast ballots in the high school lobby from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. Two board seats One for Coldwater Township and one for Dayton Township and a district wide treasurer are on the ballot. Nominated are Coldwater: Harry Ott re election Dayton: Clyde Stuntz Wilson Ray Clinton Marsh. August Backer is stepping down from Dayton. Verle Barth seeks re election as treasurer. Eligibility follows state requirements of age residence and citizenship.
Infant Lori Jo Hamilton daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Hamilton of Iowa City was baptized at a Sunday 3 pm service at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Waverly. Grandparents G E Hamilton of Greene and Ray Phelps of Plainfield attended along with great grandmother Mrs Schwab of Waverly.
Hundreds of Monarch butterflies settled on the trees of the Emil Ruzicka farm grove last Wednesday. They lingered through heavy weekend rains and then moved southward. a few stragglers remained. Monarchs travel about 20 miles a day, with reports of swarms near Apalachicola and along Florida's west coast. Viceroys accompany them for bird protection, feeding on milkweed and willow, while Monarchs feed on milkweed and are distasteful to birds.

The Greene Sportsman's Club invites the community to a Friday fish fry at the high school auditorium. Serving starts at 6 30 p m with all you can eat walleyes French fries rolls ice cream and coffee or milk. Robert Curtis and Don Deiies posted a 36 to win the Men's Best Ball Tournament at the Country Club on Monday morning. Keith Drakle and Jack Brandt led a trio tied for second with 37s, while Clyde Stuntz and Richard Wagoner won the flag hole.
Mr and Mrs B Needham Nicky Needham and Mrs Needham s mother Mrs S W Downs returned Monday from a visit in the home of Dr and Mrs Everett Rogers and baby at Columbus Ohio All except Mr Needham had gone to Columbus two weeks ago to care for the Rogers baby while Dr and Mrs Rogers and Sherman Needham attended a National Sociological meeting in Washington D C Mr Needham joined later and accompanied his family home
Henry C Passmore 82 of Tonia died Friday after a lingering illness Funeral services were held at Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home Nashua with burial in Glenwood Cemetery He is survived by his wife Dorothy Salisbury Greene and one son Clifford from a previous marriage.

Iowa school buses will be inspected at 367 centers by division of transportation state department of public instruction and Iowa highway safety patrol officers. The program runs Aug 20 to Dec 8 1962. About 5 600 vehicles will transport a quarter of a million pupils this year.
