Greene city officials announce an embargo on loads over 3 tons on the Shell Rock River Bridge citing a rating that the structure cannot support its own weight. Two cars on the bridge exceeds the limit, prompting calls for replacement and public input to the City Council. Halloween safety tips follow from the Greene Jaycees with guidance on trick or treat timing and precautions.
Grace Barnhart 78, of Greene, died Oct 11 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital after a massive coronary. Services held Oct 15 at First Presbyterian Church Greene with Rev. Howard Dukelow and Rev Donald Neely officiating. Interment Rosehill Cemetery Greene. Survived by five daughters and many grandchildren. Citizens advised to follow safety tips on crossing streets and Halloween night traffic precautions.
Funeral services for Sadie A. Reints 85 were conducted Sunday at St John Lutheran Church Clarksville. She died Thursday at Floyd County Memorial Hospital after a long heart illness. Born March 14 1888 in Butler County she married E A Reints January 25 1910 and lived in Clarksville most of her life with time in Canada and near Greene. Survived by two daughters Kathryn Schuknecht Greene and Minnie Ferry West Des Moines. three sons Russell Charles Clarksville and Manon Waterloo. ten grandchildren nine great grandchildren two great great grandchildren and a sister in St Paul Minn. Funeral and burial at Lynwood Cemetery Clarksville with Schwartz Funeral Home in charge.
Funeral services were conducted at Reid's Funeral Chapel Marble Rock for Mrs Ray Lilian Lamb born June 13 1891 Chicago Illinois daughter of Joseph and Catherine nee Shurman Bartnik and died October 17 aged 82 Americana Nursing Home Mason City. Survived by husband Bay two sons George Molloy Mankato Minnesota and Charles Lamb Dobbs Ferry New York three grandchildren. Rev William Granger officiated with Reid's in charge of arrangements.
Norman Graven and Jim Menken lead a two year fund drive for the Girl Scouts with a kickoff planned from November 3 to 10 inclusive. The campaign notes a token raise last year and emphasizes continued local fundraising efforts.
The Greene community hosts a Halloween Parade on Tuesday evening October 30. A corral of volunteer workers will drive fund raising due to rising costs. An information meeting for volunteers is set for Oct 30 at 7 30 at the Community Center. Preschoolers to grade 8 participate in a costume contest with prizes, followed by Trick-or-Treating from 5 30 to 7 30 pm. The event is sponsored by the Greene Jaycees and Greene Commercial Club with treats for all children and a public viewing at the Center.
Weston Lowran Mooner of Greene dies at Veteran's Hospital Des Moines. Funeral service Saturday at 10 30 AM at St Mar s Catholic Church with burial in St Mary s Cemetery Greene.
A campaign to raise funds for Cliff Burroughs' state senate bid kicked off this week with Jim Drakle named local finance chairman. Volunteers contact potential donors and checks can be given to Dale Schroeder or Jim Drake at the Burroughs for Senate Committee. Roger Ipsen is hospitalized at Allen Memorial with injuries from a motorcycle accident.
The Greene Recorder urges advertisers and news submitters to send items by the early deadline next week. News must arrive by 4 40 p m to be set in time. The Recorder will distribute to Greene boxes and rural routes on Wednesday with other deliveries unchanged.
The Greene Girl Scout Cadets will collect for UNICEF and its Treat of Life program after 4 pm this Monday evening October 29, in a local drive.
