The Ramblers, rolling in conference play, face dangerous St Ansgar tonight in a pivotal matchup. Supporters are urged to back the team as they chase a crucial victory in front of a expected crowded crowd.
Three Butler County residents left for induction on Tuesday October 6. George G. DeWitte of Allison volunteered for service. Vernon R. Whitney of Waverly was drafted. James Eldon Etjen of Parkersburg transferred to Federal Way Washington. Miss Sonja Diane Pruisner of Kesley enlisted in the U S Marine Corps.
Butler County plans a 1964 fall corn campaign led by Krik Eggert Klahsen with November 9 to 14 canvass dates. Volunteers are sought to reach areas hit hard by drought while aiming to collect 5000 bushels, surpassing the 1963 total of 4000. Corn donations are traded to General Mills for soybean protein to aid nutrition.
Merle Tracy, son of Mr and Mrs 7 B Tracy, died October 8 at his La Mirada California home. Born west of Greene he lived in Greene for many years. Survivors include his wife Marian Gough a son and three granddaughters.
The Iowa division of the American Cancer Society reports a 1964 crusade total of 690799.72, just short of the 700000 goal by 9200. Butler County raised 5175.48 toward a 4305 goal, with book prizes awarded to Barbara Wabbena of Allison, Mrs. George Luchtenburg of Allison, and Lloyd Tiege of Rockford.
Rep H R Gross of Waterloo, Republican, receives endorsement from Americans for Constitutional Action ACA. Admiral Moreell and ACA board members praise his voting record for sound money private markets local self government and national defense while opposing Soviet appeasement and socialist policies.
Mr and Mrs John Grace harvested a squash weighing 107 pounds and measuring 6 feet 2 inches in circumference. Mrs Grace, shown with the oversized gourd, notes it attracts many photos from passersby. The seed originated from the southern part of the state.
An Open House will be held at the Elementary School on Wednesday October 21 at 7 30 p m for parents of children in kindergarten through sixth grade. A short program will be in the multi purpose room followed by classroom visits and refreshments.
Hampton resident Guy E. Bonjour was fined 10 dollars and 4 dollars costs for failing to stop at a through highway. Edward Launisch of Chicago was fined 5 dollars and 4 dollars costs for a stop sign violation.
The State Conservation Commission announces the 12th bow and arrow deer season opens Saturday. Hunting hours are half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset with a bag limit of one deer. Licenses sold throughout the open season. about 2,000 applications received. 2,858 licenses issued last year. The 51 day season closes December 6.
The public is invited to a county-wide Meet Your Candidate Night in Greene Community High School gym on Tuesday October 20 starting at 8:00 p m. Democratic and Republican candidates across state, district three and county levels will attend. The event will be informal.
Wayne Wood a former Greene car dealer died from a personal safety related gunshot wound at his 3 Silver Lane home in Mason City last Friday about 10 a.m. The Cerro Gordo County Medical Examiner Dr Joseph E Christopherson reported the death. Wood had partnered with his brother Everett C Wood in Wood Motor Company since 1955 as a Volkswagen franchised dealer.
More than 200 people gathered October 6 in Mason City to hear NIAD North Iowa Area Development progress. Attendees from Butler County included J K Drake and Kay Connelly. Nine counties participate. nine study committees reported results to attendees.
Three people were hospitalized after two separate wrecks at the same location near Greene, occurring about an hour apart Saturday morning. Dean Schmitt, 27, suffered a brain concussion after his 1951 Ford pickup rolled into a ditch. Patricia Dralle, 18, and her father Lawrence Dralle were hurt when a second collision occurred between parked cars. Patricia broke her collar bone, and Lawrence sustained a broken pelvis. Don Clikeman was treated for a wrist injury. Charges for Clikeman and Schmitt were issued by the Butler County Sheriff’s office.
Mr and Mrs Paul Drahos of Cedar Rapids announce the birth of a son, Timothy John, born on a Sunday in October. The baby weighed six pounds three ounces and joins parents, grandparents Ruth Jewell of Greene and Mr and Mrs Drakes of Cedar Rapids.
Butler County science teachers from Aplington Clarksville Dumont Greene and Parkersburg High Schools met in Parkersburg last Wednesday. They formed a committee to list seminar topics and will report at the next meeting on October 28 at Aplington.
Butler County Farm Bureau will host its annual meeting with main speaker J Merrill Anderson, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. The event is Tuesday October 20 at 7:00 PM in the Farm Bureau Auditorium. Anderson, Newton, serves his first term as Iowa president after leading District 5 as state Farm Bureau director and serving on the American Farm Bureau Federation board.
The state conservation commission announces raccoon hunting season opens Saturday at noon CST statewide with no bag or possession limits. The season closes at midnight February 28, 1965.
Demonstration of a new terrace and drainage layout for Northeast Iowa farmland runs Oct 14 15 at Don Harris farm six miles east of Allison on Iowa Highway 3. Barton McAninch announces the storage type terraces designed to store runoff until it can be carried away by drain tile.
Waterloo Republican H R Gross posted a perfect attendance record for this year’s session. He was present and voting on all roll calls, marking his sixth straight year at 100 percent. In 16 years, 3306 roll calls show Gross present 99 percent of the time.
In Osage Memorial Hospital A D Campbell was admitted on Monday October 5 for surgery.
Greene Ramblers raced to 41 13 win over Manly as Weichers returned a kickoff 75 yards and Ott, Stewart, and Kamker starred on offense. Manly trailed 20 7 at half and faced a tough second half after a late first half score by Weichers.
The Courts Superintendents office and County Extension Office sponsor a county wide Career Night on Tuesday, October 20th, at 7 30 p m in Allison Bristow High School Auditorium. John Robert Bodecker nineteen of Parkersburg was arrested by Parkersburg Marshal Kenneth Cook on Wednesday October 7 on a charge of false drawing and uttering a Mo account check. He pleaded guilty in Justice of Peace Court and was sentenced to thirty days in the county jail in Allison.
Ellen Lindaman, Butler County Dairy Princess, will represent Butler County at the Iowa Dairy Princess contest in Des Moines October 21 and 22, held with the Iowa Dairy Conference at the Savery Hotel. Judging begins Wednesday the 21st with the crowning Thursday evening following the parade of princesses. Ellen, 18, a freshman at the University of Iowa, is from a Bristow area farm and was valedictorian at Allison-Bristow High School. She is one of 33 finalists and will compete for the Iowa Dairy Princess title and later represent Iowa in the American Dairy Princess Contest.
Mr and Mrs CuWarne Stark weather of Ottumwa welcomed a son born Thursday October 8 weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces Rodney Lee. Mr Starkweather is son of Mr and Mrs Cecil Starkweather.
