Slocum 19 son of Mr and Mrs Charles N Slocum completed a six week supply course at The Ordnance School Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland He was trained to maintain stock records receive store issue and ship ordnance equipment and supplies He entered the army last April and finished basic training at Fort Carson Colorado Slocum attended Greene High School.
The Greene Community Schools Parent-Teacher Association met on Wednesday evening October 7 in the school auditorium. Junior High girls chorus and Senior High Sextet performed directed by Glenda Landsgaard. President Aaron Jewell led the meeting and introduced speaker Allan Vander Well on child development and behavior. Refreshments followed in the cafeteria with fifth trade parents in charge.
Esther Hollingsworth of Greene and Ruth Miller of Allison returned home Saturday after a two week vacation with a bus tour. They traveled through New Hampshire Maine Vermont Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut and New York City and came home via the Turnpike from New York to Chicago.
Farmers eyeing participation in the 1960 conservation reserve program face a Friday October 16 deadline to apply for contracts to begin next year. Theo J Bauman chair of the Butler County ASC committee explains the process from establishing basic annual payment rates to submitting contracts for final approval before the 1960 crop season starts.

Daryl Shook arrived home on Saturday October 3 for a 20 day leave with his mother Mrs. Lyle Shook and relatives. He is part of the All-Iowa Platoon of 75 men who left Des Moines July 4 for basic training in San Diego California. He will return to Camp Pendleton on October 22.
Junior High football team defeated Marble Rock Rockford 27 to 13 at the losers field. Greene led with 204 yards and 13 first downs as the Warriors produced 4 first downs and 154 yards. Kingery scored on a 20 yard run after a fumble recovery, Albrecht added a 5 yard TD, and Weichers posted two third period scores set up by Menken's 68 yard interception return. The squad hosts Nora Springs at 3 45 this afternoon and will hold an inter-squad game tomorrow at 3 30 to close the season.
Lorraine Dee, daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard D Tjarks of Ames, was baptized during Sunday worship on October 11 at the Presbyterian Church. Mrs Tjarks is Lois Scott, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Scott of Greene.

Wendell Crooks and Donna Vorhes Crooks welcome Cynthia Lee 7 lb 6 oz born Friday at Cedar Valley Hospital. Gary Gerhard and Donna Osier Gerhard welcome 7 lb 10 oz son born October 12. Gordon Freese man and Donna? infant Kevin D. born October 45th at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City.
Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Bathke returned home Wednesday from San Pedro California where Mrs Bathke visited for several weeks in the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs L C Johnson and Leslie Margaret
Jim Barth son of Mr and Mrs Gale Barth Bernard Hildebrand son of Mr and Mrs Gerald Hildebrand and John Menken son of Mr and Mrs Rick Menken have joined the navy. The youths left Waterloo on Tuesday October 6 for San Diego California to begin basic training.
Priscill Pooley, daughter of Mr and Mrs Dwight Pooley of Greene, was elected attendant to the Queen at Upper Iowa University Homecoming in Fayette on October 17. A parade will be followed by a 2:00 PM procession as Upper Iowa hosts Dubuque University. The queen is chosen from the upper class with attendants from the freshmen class.
The 200 acre Van Raden farm, seven miles northeast of Greene in Floyd County, was to be sold at public auction on November 4 to satisfy a writ for 6409.20 plus interest. Van Raden had secured two corn loans totaling 6160.50 using false statements to the Commodity Credit Corporation. He remains liable for court costs and other expenses and faces further federal action on pastured land issues under Soil Bank agreements.
Week end visitors from Pasadena California Mr and Mrs L Glenn Fwitzer and Roger Schenk of Marshalltown spent the weekend with Mrs Fwitzers brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs Warren Hollingsworth.
Acting Field Director Percy Milard announced John M. Lang as crew leader for the 1959 Census of Agriculture. Lang will direct census takers canvassing Butler County, receive five days of training in Cedar Falls, and begin recruiting and training before field work starts November 11, 1959.
North Central Falcons of Manly beat Greene Ramblers 19 to 14 on the road last Friday night, marking Greene’s first conference loss. Johnson threw for key scores, Grendler and Nelson sparked Greene’s offense, but costly fumbles and a late Rambler drive fell short as time expired.
Gene Carlton Eveland 21 of Waverly pled guilty in district court to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated second offense. Judge Butler fined him 300 dollars or 100 days in jail. unable to pay, he remained jailed. Eveland was arrested in Shell Rock on November 11, 1958. Daniel Dean Ricks 16 of New Providence pled guilty in juvenile court to driving with suspended license. Judge Wild fined 40 dollars plus 13.50 costs. Ricks was arrested near Parkersburg on September 26, 1959. Richard Lovejoy Nieman 22 of Shell Rock was arrested October 9 on a charge of false drawing and uttering checks. arraigned and pled guilty, sentenced to 16 days in county jail.
In Hospital Dr Feyereisen was taken to St Marys Hospital in Rochester on October 5 where he is undergoing treatment.
State Services for Crippled Children will run a field clinic at St John Lutheran Church in Charles City on Friday October 23 for children under 21 from Worth Mitchell How Cerro Gordo Floyd Chick Franklin and Butler counties. Specialists from SLCC at The State University of Town will examine children with crippling conditions including pediatricians orthopedic surgeons and therapists. Each case is reviewed in Iowa City and mailed to local physicians with recommendations, no diagnostic charges.
A joint meeting of the Veterans of World War I and the Auxiliaries will be held at Memorial Hall Shell Rock on Sunday October 18 1959 at 2 00 p m Department officers and other World War I I veterans are welcome.
