Community urges readers to enjoy fall weather and relax. Local note recounts Wilsey Clark and Harvey Wyele spotting a rattlesnake near Nashua last Sunday. Mentions a football contest prize, National Newspaper Week bouquet, and thanks to correspondents and local advertisers.
A dollar a year Oliver Super 55 Diesel tractor is donated to the Winnebago Council Iowa Boy Scouts for a new 300 acre camp near Marble Rock. Leased from Oliver by the council for $1 annually, with trade-in on a newer model later, the rig will aid road work and moving gear across camp areas inaccessible by truck. The Van-Web carrier is providing a hydraulic lift carry-all. The camp aims to open for regular camping in summer 1959 for units from nine counties.
Senior students hosted freshmen at a Saturday night party in the school lunch room. Larry Gabe and Sandra Eckoff won queen and prize for funniest costumes from initiation held earlier in the week. Records provided music with Mr. Bachman as master of ceremonies. Miss Landsgaard and Mrs. Boller sponsored the event.
Mrs Mae Hamilton died Saturday at her Red Deer Alberta home after fifty years in the province. A native of Butler County she left for Canada long ago and passed away at her residence. Her sisters Mrs Esther Davis and Mrs Amy Gray received the telegram announcing her death.
The Junior High Ramblers and Nashua played to a 13 to 13 tie. Green rushed for 91 yards and 20 receiving, Wunsch returned a Nashua interception 60 yards and kicked the extra point. A late 10 yard fourth down pass to Gabe Green set up a potential go ahead score, but an offside nullified the point. The Ramblers travel to Riceville next.
Colin C. McCauley aged 80 of Marble Rock died Monday at 3 00 p m in Cedar Valley hospital Charles City He is survived by his wife Maude one son Earl of Rockford one daughter Mrs Frank Ethel Johnston of Charles City and one half brother Shoefeld of Laramie Wyoming Also surviving five grandchildren and two great grandchildren Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 00 p m at Hamilton Funeral Chapel Marble Rock Burial in West Side Cemetery
Bert M. Marsh died September 26 at 1 40 PM after a week ill in Charles City hospital. He was 75 years 6 months 3 days old. A longtime resident, he lived in Bruning Nebraska since 1928. Survived by wife Pauline two sons Richard Onawa and Leon Marble Rock daughter Ira Mrs Francis Knapp Greene seven grandchildren two brothers Ira and Dewitt and sister Retta Dunning. Funeral at First Methodist Church Greene September 30 officiated by Rev Keenen Sheldon with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
The first Story Hour of the fall season is set for Saturday October 5 at Greene Public Library from 1 15 to 2 00 p m. Children four years old and older may attend entering by the side door. Mrs Robert Fischer hosts with stories poems and records. The hour repeats each Saturday at the library.
The Rev Carl Sembolat of Chicago Illinois died August 29 after a nine month illness. He served as pastor at St Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene for several years until 1923. He then led Trinity Lutheran Church in Chicago until retirement on July 1 this year.
The U S Atomic Energy Commission presents an Atoms For Peace exhibit in Greene with an animated panel showing how a nuclear reactor produces steam and electricity. Local sponsors include the Greene Jaycees with national backing from the National University Extension Association and the National Junior Chamber of Commerce. The exhibit runs October 22 from noon to 8 pm near Interstate Power Company with free admission.
Dr William J. Petersen announces 126 people elected to the State Historical Society of Iowa in September. Dayton W. Mather was chosen from Greene. 121 come from 66 towns in 55 counties. Des Moines led with eight new members. many cities contributed several members, while 41 towns had one each.
Klassi Rognes Hardware plans a three day grand opening October 17 19 featuring demonstrations by factory reps and many prizes. Wilbur Klassi and Alfred Rognes Jr purchased the remodeled Harrison Store and added a new front floor and fixtures to create a modern hardware and appliance retailer in North Town.
Leroy V. Kingery son of Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery of Greene Iowa is a freshman at McPherson College in McPherson Kansas. The college is a four year church related liberal arts institution. Leroy graduated from Greene Public School.
Investors Mutual Inc announces a regular quarterly dividend of 9.12 cents per share from investment income and a 7.34 cent per share distribution from realized security profits totaling 11.46 cents per share payable October 10 to shareholders. Joseph M. Fitzsimmons, Chairman, confirms it is the 68th consecutive quarterly dividend.
The Commercial Club will hold a supper on Tuesday evening at 6 30 p m at the Greene Community School cafeteria. A chicken supper will be served.
Mrs. Anna Hartz 74 of Charles City died Monday at Cedar Valley Hospital from complications of a chronic illness. Born December 24, 1882, she married John B. Hartz on March 12, 1902. Survived by two daughters, one granddaughter, a brother. funeral Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Grossman Funeral Home. Burial Riverside Cemetery.
A course for adults will start October 7 at Greene Community School from 1 30 to 4 30 p m for four weeks. Participants should bring a thermometer and pay 0 cents for the Red Cross Home Nursing Book. Mrs Wayne Martin county Red Cross chair urges more women to enroll amid Asiatic flu outbreak.
Explorer Scouts Craig Burroughs Steven Rotter and Bruce Mead of Post 26 will present slides from the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge Pennsylvania Monday at 7 30 pm at First Presbyterian Church. A display of articles from the rid will be sold with no admission charge. The event is open to all.
Mr and Mrs Darrel Brink announce the birth of a daughter on Friday September 27 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City. The infant weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces. Mrs Florian Rutz and Mr are parents of a son born Thursday September 26 at City hospital. Christopher Steven weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces. Mr and Mrs Warren Turner of Mason City announce a daughter born Saturday September 25 at Park Hospital Mason City weighing 8 pounds 13 ounces named Kimberly Vac. Mrs Turner is Rita Ann Drake. Mr and Mrs Larry DeBower Greene report a birth Tuesday morning at Lutheran hospital Hampton.
The second annual Waterloo District Churchmanship Institute will be held October 10 at Charles City's First Methodist Church. Instruction in church finance will be given. Bishop F Gerald Ensley leads 14 October institutes statewide with attendees from Black Hawk Bremer Buchanan Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Howard Mitchell and Worth counties.
A Des Moines Woltz Studio photographer will be in Greene at City Hall on Monday October 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No appointment is needed. Parents receive a free 1958 portrait calendar featuring their children. Children aged 2 months to 12 years may pose, with optional group photos if multiple children exist.
William Patton has been chosen by the Butler County Agricultural Extension Council to become Extension Director effective October 1, following Ivan Wikner's resignation for graduate study in agronomy at Iowa State College. Patton, a Winneshiek County youth assistant, is a Manchester High School and Iowa State College graduate with a Farm Operation and Rural Education major. He served as a U S Air Force Ammunition Officer in Korea before returning to Winneshiek County as Extension Youth Assistant. He and his wife Janice with their two children will reside in Allison.
Greene Bureau Dairy judging team led by David Butterbrod Sherman Needham and Dennis Ott earned a silver rating at the State Dairy Judging Contest held at Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress grounds on Saturday. One hundred fifty one teams competed in the event with ratings ranging from Geld Silver Bronze Honorable Mention to Participating Team.
The Methodist Uniren supper will be held this Thursday evening October 3 serving begins at 5 30 pm. Local church members invite neighbors to attend and support the community event at the church hall. Proceeds help church programs and outreach.
Greene Ramblers defeated Riceville 7 to 6 on the loser's field to open defense of the Corn Bowl title and extend their undefeated streak to 21. Roger Schuknecht starred with crucial tackles in the second half and Pierce halted Riceville on the failed extra point, sealing a hard fought victory for Greene.
The Parent-Teacher Association holds a meeting this evening at 8:00 in the High School auditorium. Mr. Robert Tornowske will speak on Driver Education. Refreshments will follow. Attendance is urged to kick off a strong PTA year.
Mrs. Donald 115s underwent an emergency appendectomy at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Monday morning.
Rev and Mrs G F Butler attended the dedication services for the new First Presbyterian Church in Mason City on Sunday morning. Two services were held at 9:45 and 11:00. Rev Butler, pastor of Greene First Presbyterian, acted as moderator of Presbytery. Rev George A Buttrick, former pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian in New York City and now at Harvard, delivered the sermon.
Wednesday night Hotshot league results show Miller Real Estate 124 and Bristow Elevator 88 with several high scores. Sam Sneed 203 and 1 Daile Willey 212 highlighted a 424 team effort from Bristow. Wednesday Rollers feature Ackley Grinders and Greene Motor Co with top series 494 by G Kingery. continued on page 4.
