The 1964 license plates go on sale at the Butler County treasurer’s office on Monday December 2. Mobile home and travel trailer licenses start January 2 1964 under the new law. The report also recalls the evolution of Iowa license laws since 1904 and notes Kennedy’s assassination and national mourning.
The Greene Recorder features ads for Christmas merchandise from local merchants and a series of Special Drawings by the Greene Commercial Club through December. Green Bucks drawings occur Saturdays at 9 15 p.m. through December 21. Prizes include two portable TVs, two transistor radios, and thirty dressed turkeys across Saturdays December 7 14 and 21. Santa visits Greene Saturdays December 7 14 and 21 around 3 30 p.m. Stores announce extended hours with 5 p.m. close on Christmas Eve.
Iowa archers must bag a deer by one half hour after sunset December 1. Dry fall conditions slowed hunting but recent moisture may spur late season kills. The shotgun season begins December 14.
Members plan a dance at the Veterans Club on Saturday night November 30 with music by the Glen Riggins orchestra for members and their guests.
The Butler County Iowa Master Growers Contest results list Russell D. Hummel of Allison as top yielder with 147.7 bushels per acre. Wilbur Cordes of Allison is second at 144.4, and Bob Feltus of Allison third at 141.12. Other participants over 120 bpa include growers from Greene, Allison, Clarksville, Aplington, and Shell Rock.
Army Pvt Stanley L. Senne son of Mr and Mrs Hugo Senne of Greene completed a five week basic aircraft maintenance course at The Aviation Center Fort Rucker Alabama early this month He entered the Army in July and finished basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri Senne is a 1963 Greene Community High School graduate.
A barn on North Third Street Greene owned by William S. Johnson burned Saturday at 9 30 am. The fire caused extensive damage with baled hay destroyed while no cattle fatalities occurred though owned by Jerry Steere. Cause unknown and Greene Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
The American Legion Auxiliary collects Butter Nut Coffee strips and coupons to fund Christmas gifts for children in orphanages and for children of disabled veterans. Mrs. Louis Ramker directs the drive with mail due by December 15. Containers are at Buchholz & Drakle Department Store, Morey's Food Market, and the B and W Food Market.
Iowa October savings bond sales totaled 8 158 583 dollars up 515 000 from 1962 with John McWhirter of Allison reporting. For ten months in 1963 Iowa reached 96 823 923 dollars or 82 percent of the yearly goal. Butler County October sales were 60 463 dollars and ten month total 729 125 dollars, equal to 80 percent of the county target.
Joe Wood has returned home from the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines where he underwent surgery on November 7. He is reported in good spirits and hopes to resume normal activities soon.
Robert F. Klunder of Allisor was appointed by the Butler County Board of Supervisors as County Recorder effective January 1, 1964. He succeeds Roger L. DeBower who has held the post since 1957 and will resign December 31. The appointment runs until the 1964 General Election, with DeBower having earlier served as deputy sheriff before election as recorder. DeBower left to join the Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative. Klunder has long worked at the Allison Tribune.
Mrs. Harry Shert, 09, of Waverly died Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Waverly. Survived by husband one daughter Mrs Clyde Williams of Shell Rock and one son Donald Shert of Waverly. Funeral at 1 PM today at Cleveland Chapel Waverly burial at Clear Lake.
A Social Security Administration district representative will visit Allison Court House on December 4, 11 and 18 from 9:00 to 11:00 am. The Waterloo district office is in room 702 Black Hawk Building W Fourth and Commercial Streets. Call 234-1554 for alternatives.
The Ramblerettes won 66 to 21 and the Rambers 62 to 39 against Riceville last Friday night. Greene led scoring and rebounding while Marsh Barth and Stuntz contributed on offense and defense. John Mead Barnett Clapham led rebounding with 14 each and Fischer had 6 assists. The Ramblers shot 45.3 percent to Riceville's 26.9 percent.
David Lee Dreier 17, a Dumont High School senior, died instantly when a car he was working under fell on him near Greene. Born January 30 1946, he was the son of Melvin and Betty Dreier. Survivors include two brothers Eugene and Chriss and sister Bonnie. Funeral at Evangelical United Brethren Church Aredale with burial in Dumont Cemetery.
Piano and organ students of Mrs. Kenneth Stirling present a Christmas program titled the spirit of Christmas. The event happens Sunday afternoon December 1 at 1 30 p m in the Allison School Auditorium. Public is invited.
Miss Freda Maass of Greene received a 25 year service certificate from the Iowa Department of Social Welfare in Des Moines for long community welfare involvement with the Butler County Board of Social Welfare. She helped found the board around 1937 and served as secretary. current members include A C Tackman Donald Ramige and Freda Maass with Larry Sogard as director. meetings are at the Allison Court House.
The North Iowa Area Development Recreation and Tourism Committee met November 18 at Mason City Junior College to discuss backing the Heritage Trail across the NIAD region. John Culbertson chaired the group which will hear Martin Miller from the Iowa Development Commission report December 16 on progress and how NIAD can help. Members reviewed brochures, planned data collection on local tourist and recreational sites, and solicited information from Elmer Bramer, Glen Maxson, Vern Rottler, Clyde Brudden and others for the December session.
Last week’s bowling results show strong scores across leagues at Greene Lanes and surrounding clubs. Bob Barth posted 201 211 611 series while Jim McLennan 217 and Lloyd Blum 212 led other high marks. Elmer Stock rolled 235 201 for 634 and Bob Barth 209 in a separate session.
Citizens in Greene and Cold Water Townships will cast ballots Tuesday December 3 in a proposed constitutional amendment on re apportionment. The Butler County Supervisors published a facsimile ballot in county papers to inform voters ahead of the polls at Greene City Hall from 8:00 a m to 8:00 p m.
Henry Paul and Myron Eikenberry were injured Monday November 18 when a scaffold collapsed causing a 16 foot fall while shingling the Farm Bureau building in Allison. Both were transported by ambulance to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Paul suffered a back injury and a double right arm fracture, and will have further X rays and treatment. Eikenberry remained hospitalized for a broken heel. Two others had left the scaffold moments before the incident.
The wrestling clinic at the high school auditorium was postponed from last Monday. It is now set for Friday night at seven thirty. Nora Springs coach Frank Limon will explain scoring and there will be wrestling demonstrations and matches.
