Nixon edges toward electoral victory in a curtainhanger finish as Illinois delivers enough votes to secure 270. In Iowa Republicans gain state offices with Robert Ray and H. R. Gross reelected in the third district. Governor Hughes wins the Senate seat, while several local GOP incumbents sail to reelection.
Butler County and state voters supported Judge Clay LeGrand retaining his seat while all five amendments passed statewide but failed in Coldwater and Butler County. The outcome shows divided turnout with LeGrand securing reelection amid mixed support for statewide measures.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Gebhardt of Waterloo announce the birth of a daughter Pamela Marie born November 3 weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Glenn Lindell and Mr and Mrs Emil Gebhardt of Cedar Falls. Great grandmother is Mrs C L Funk of Waterloo. Mrs Gebhardt is formerly Jeanette Lindell of Greene.
Greene High School music department presents the musical comedy Dates and Mates on November 12 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium directed by Harold Blosser with assistant Lyle Stirling and instrumental director Ray Holtz. Tom Truitt portrays Paul Walden the young program chief, Claire Arhart plays Nancy Welsh, Sherry Debner features Marci Moran, Diane Debner is Madame Rinaldi, and Jeanne Hildebrand portrays Alice.
Jerry Lee Ott arrived in San Pedro California after a week with his wife Linda and her parents Mr and Mrs Raymond Hauser. Hausers and Otts drove to Omaha Nebraska to retrieve him. He resumes duties aboard the ship Talwano and departs for eight months overseas duty tonight. He expects to return to the United States in June 1969. Linda Ott will stay in a trailer at her parents home.
Mrs Henry Graven was returned for a two year term on Wartburg College's Board of Regents. Seven of the twenty members were re elected at the convention of the American Lutheran Church in Omaha.
Six were named to six year terms expiring in 1974 while Mrs Graven’s term ends in 1970. New six year appointees include John H Graflund Moline Illinois William H Engelbrecht Waverly Rev Dean Kilgust Green Bay Wisconsin Rev Donald Loots Mason City Fred Miller Fontanelle and Dr Walter Seeger Detroit Michigan. Mr and Mrs Bruce Maier Gary Vickie of Greene moved to Winnipeg Canada where Maier will manage a McDonalds Drive In. After a month in Canada they relocated Oct 31 to 367 Flora Ave Winnipeg Manitoba Canada.
Postmaster Robert L. Curtis announced that the Greene Town Post Office will be closed all day on Veterans Day November 11 1968. There will be no window service or rural carrier delivery. mail will be received distributed and dispatched as on other holidays.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars post 8763 met in Allison on Friday October 28 and chartered 27 members for a county wide group. New officers include Stene Schipper commander John Rops senior vice commander Russell Hansen junior vice commander Roger Shultz quartermaster Roland Brekke chaplain Wayne Hewitt judge advocate Harvey Poppe surgeon Pete Boomgarden adjutant Darrell Prange legislative officer Howard Shipman patriotic officer Armin Bull guard and James Conger officer of the day.
Sgt Steven Mathers 21 rural Rockwell died in Vietnam from combat wounds. He served in Company B 2nd Battalion 28th Infantry 1st Infantry Division, entered service Sept 12, 1967, in Vietnam since February. Born December 8, 1946 in Charles City. Stanley Van Dyke received a 22 day Navy leave and visited his parents Mr and Mrs Henry Van Dyke. A Sunday potluck dinner in his honor drew 36 relatives from Ackley Bristow Hampton Dumont Parkersburg Allison and Hansen ville.
Floyd County 4-H plans its annual Award Night on Monday evening November 18 at the Charles City Junior High Auditorium. About 100 juniors and intermediates with outstanding records for 1968 will receive awards. Long time project medals go to older members along with honorary initiations and the alumni award for a former Floyd County 4-H member. Rock Grove and West St. Charles clubs contribute part of the program with Frank Katcher and Mrs. Ralph Heddens presenting awards. County 4-H council members, Tom Ritter and Jane Shultz, will preside.
The Greene Ramblers overwhelmed the Nashua Bulldogs 39 to 14 to clinch the conference crown at home last Friday night. Bill Garners led a potent attack with a strong ground game by Debner Johnson Wendall and Dick Stuntz, followed by Shultz’s aerials and quarterback Kemp’s swift runs. The Ramblers dominated from start to finish as the defense stifled Nashua throughout the game.
Greene hosts Ackley in a high school football clash described as the product of coaching and teamwork. Nashua backs Leroy Crooks and Randy Dietz pace the visitors and Galen Vetter anchors defense as Greene builds a 24 to 7 halftime lead on a series of long plays and key receptions.
Agri-Business Club at North Iowa Area Community College names committees to oversee the 310 acre campus east of Mason City. Martin Bramer of Aredale is public relations head. Committees cover custom operation, fertilizer, herbicide and insecticide, seed and rotation, plus finance and marketing. students plan and hire help for soil work, planting, harvesting, seed and chemical purchases, and financing and marketing.
Mid-West Truckers Association announces the franchising of T & M Service Station in Greene as an authorized towing and service center for Iowa and surrounding area. The center joins 120 Iowa facilities and 3,700 nationwide centers, with formal presentation by Association president Charles A. Rexroad Jr.
Butler county divides into four CROP drive areas with chairmen in three sections. Southeast Rev Richard Gronewald of Faith Lutheran Shell Rock leads. Northeast John Mc Roberts Greene. Northwest Rev W M Robinson United Methodist Aredale Washington Township Egert Klahsen Aplington. Kick-off is November 18 in Allison. CROP Sunday on November 17 will feature church announcements. Canvass runs November 18 to December 1.
Charles L. Gallmeyer, stationed with the Marines at Cherry Point North Carolina, is spending a 15 day leave with his grandmother Mrs Kathryn Duffield and other relatives.
Drake University athletic department speaker Kay Prugh will address Greene High School Ramblers at the Greene Quarterback Club sponsored banquet honoring the Corn Bowl Conference champions.
