Those Good Old River Days Athletic Competitions
Greene Jaycees stage a Saturday lineup for all ages as part of Those Good Old River Days. Girls softball features a 4 team tournament from Rockford Charles City Nashua and Green at 1 pm. At 1 30 pm arm wrestling has six classes with prize money for top 3 in each class. Tug of war follows in three weight classes with 5 person teams and prize money for top 3 teams. Beginners Band Starts at Greene Elementary School
A new beginners band forms in the 4th grade at Greene Elementary. Free instrumental lessons available with a 2 month rental plan for new and used instruments. Tryouts this week in school to decide entry into the regular band. Parents invited to visit the music room Saturday 8 am to 3 pm. Lessons begin Monday June 10. Jacob Simon turns 100. Anna Christensen turns 102 in recent birthdays.

North Iowa Band queen candidate Pam Brinkman profile
Pam Brinkman, GHS Class of 1974, Greene, is this year’s North Iowa Band queen candidate. She plays B flat and alto clarinets and E flat soprano clarinet, participates in concert and marching bands, and was in a clarinet quartet. She has sung in madrigal and chamber choir, worked on play crews, and is active in St. Peter’s Lutheran church. She plans to teach Bible School in June and will attend Area I Calmar for LPN studies in the fall.

Patti Rutz to Manage Greene Swimming Pool
Patti Rutz will lead the Greene pool season as head instructor and top swimmer. Her staff includes Susie Rottler Vanda Hertland and Lori Bigler as full-time guards and instructors with Kathi Larson as part-time staff. Rites for Mrs Ruth Grassley set for Thursday
Funeral services for Mrs Ruth G Grassley will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home Cedar Falls officiated by Rev Donald Hager and Rev John Reby. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Born November 17 1897 in Grands County she lived on a farm near New Hartford for 50 years. She taught in rural schools, ran an upholstery business 30 years, and belonged to several local clubs. Survived by two sons Charles and Gene, two daughters Bunny Wiegmann and Les West, one sister and nine grandchildren.

Posthumous Citation for B M Skillen
The late Bernard M. Skillen received a posthumous citation from President Nixon for devoted service in the Armed Forces. His widow Mrs Skillen of 1328 Bishop Ave Waterloo accepted the award. Skillen died in April at 55 from arteriosclerosis. He served as a supervisor at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works and was a 19 car member of the 28th Ordinance Army Reserve. A WW II and Korea War veteran, he earned the Bronze Star for service in Germany.
