Registration begins Friday May 31, open to elementary students. a 50 cent enrollment fee applies to those without free library service, while Greene Dayton and Pleasant Grove township residents have free access. The library lists new children books and plans adding more this summer.
Poppy chairman Mrs. a c It Uistien announced a total of 147.40 collected from poppy sales on Friday and Saturday. Last year’s amount was 135.00. Winners of the poppy poster contest were Melinda Smith and Jolene Litterer, sixth grade students. Helpers on the street included Sue Williams Valerie Starkweather Terri Starkweather and Janea Fischer.
Tests and try-outs are underway this week in the 4th grade at Greene Elementary to recruit new instrumental students for a beginners band. Results will go home with letters to parents. Free summer lessons for interested students. Parents should visit the High School band room on Saturday June 1 between 1 to 5 PM and 6 to 9 PM to discuss instrument acquisition. music mothers will serve coffee and cookies during those hours.
Obbo Harken of near Packard relapsed Friday morning and was rushed to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. He had returned home two weeks earlier after spending three weeks there for surgery.
John Whitehead faced charges of disturbing the peace in Knight's Court. He was fined $15.00 and ordered to pay $10.00 in costs.
Memorial Day services will be held Thursday May 30 at 10 a.m. at the cemetery with the Greene High School Band color bearers firing squad American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars Girl Scouts Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts forming the line of march. A bridge service at 9 30 a.m. includes band numbers a wreath lower by Girl Scouts prayers volley and taps. Traffic plan designates gates for inbound and outbound flows. drivers urged to avoid drives 8 11 a.m. and to park at cemetery lots.
The Butler County Retarded Childrens Association sponsors a Wednesday tour to Woodward State Hospital. Depart Parkersburg at 7:30 a.m., school tour from 10:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. Lunch in downtown restaurants. No membership required. Contact Mrs Louis Litterer Greene by June 1.
A dance is held at the Country Club on Saturday evening June 1. The committee includes Dell Curtis T S Albrecht Galen Martzahn Harry Ott and Charles Ray.
The Greene Merchants will play in their first contest of the season at Allison next Sunday afternoon, June 2nd. Games will be played each Sunday afternoon through August 25th. All contests will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Brunsma son of Mr and Mrs Bernard G Brunsma of Greene is reassigned to Chanute AFB Illinois for technical training as a United States Air Force aircraft maintenance specialist He enlisted recently and completed basic training A 1962 Greene Community High School graduate he attended the State University of Town
John Gustafson, Greene High School counselor, receives a National Defense Education Act scholarship to attend a Guidance Institute practicum at North Dakota State University in Fargo. The program provides supervised counseling practicum and real world experience.
The Board of Cemetery Trustees in Greene sets up the Improvement and Decoration Fund for Rose Hill Cemetery. Donations to beautify and decorate the grounds will be used only for cosmetic work and not for perpetual care, which has its own fund. The Board administers the new fund.
Arvid Lindell underwent major surgery on May 22 at Park Hospital in Mason City and remains under care.
Ruth Elizabeth Baty Jones born 1908 near Sigourney and educated at Northwestern and Missouri School of Journalism. She married Maurice B. Jones in 1937 and co published Times Plain Dealer Cresco since 1947. Funeral services were at Bradley Funeral Home Cresco with burial at What Cheer.

Walter McClure 88 died May 22 in a Cherokee hospital after a month-long illness. Born April 30 1875 in Greene to Charles G and unknown McClure he married Isabelle Clancy and had three daughters Kathleen of Fort Myers Florida and Patricia Cliff of Grand Rapids Michigan. He long served as a local businessman and postmaster before moving to Iowa Falls. Funeral May 25 at St Marys Church officiated by Rev Joseph Murphy, burial in St Marys Cemetery. Williams Mortuary in charge.
Tre Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative selected area high school juniors Margery Ramker and Kim Leichtman to join the 1963 Town Electric Youth Tour to Washington D C in June. About 60 Iowa youths will depart Des Moines for a four day stay visiting NRECA and REA headquarters and other sights. A breakfast with Iowa congressional delegation will be highlighted before a Capitol tour.
Henry Siemens was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Saturday for treatment.
Local high school held its annual awards program in the auditorium with band and chorus selections. Scholarships went to Philip Pooley Janet Fiddick Daryl Fischer Betty Wirth and other seniors Juniors and sophomores received basic letter awards. Various sport and activity awards followed for football girls basketball tennis golf and track with multiple named recipients.
Mrs. William H. Buchholz lies in Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after a fall at home Sunday evening caused a fractured right hip. She receives treatment as an in patient, with physicians monitoring her condition.

The First Presbyterian Church of Greene observes its centennial with Sunday services led by guest speaker Dr. Robert French of Des Moines. A noon pot luck follows the 11 am service, then a 2 pm service with former pastors assisting. The church lineage traces to 1863 and complex relocations, renovations, and additions through 1955 and beyond, including a Wurlitzer organ and chimes. Notable former pastors expected to attend include Rev. John W. Chase, Rev. William Grossheim, Rev. John Ludemann, and Rev. Fred Cheney.
