Butler County residents face a courthouse decision with a plan to build a new structure. The ad argues restoration is insufficient due to framing and rot, outlining higher costs, moving offices, and long term maintenance, urging voters to approve both construction and tax levy ballots.
Junior High girls win the Corn Bowl Conference Championship with 75 points, ahead of Nashua 48 and Rockford 46. Greene results highlight multiple firsts and seconds including Jeannie Dralle, Liz Holtz, Peggy Steere, Allene Jensen, Sherri Muhlenbruck, and others. other squad members listed.
Spring sports awards night scheduled for Monday May 21 at 7 00 PM is a potluck picnic at Perrin Park. Track, fall, softball, baseball and 1972 football letters will be awarded. If weather turns inclement the event moves to the school cafeteria. Drinks will be provided.
Nina Whitson 66 lifelong Floyd and Chickasaw Counties resident died Friday at Chautauqua Nursing Home Charles City. Memorial services were held Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home with Rev. A C Wegner officiating. She deeded her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Born June 15 1906 in Floyd County she was the daughter of Albert and Harriet Whitson of Nashua. She graduated from Nashua High School. Survived by four sisters Myrtle Hunt Charles City Pearl Neumann Greene Oscar Thorson rural Charles City and Ida Vieths Yakima Wash and one brother George Whitson Des Moines.
Storekeeper 3C Richard Stock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stock, spent last week with his parents on leave from Charleston D C. He returned to base on Wednesday May 16.
The Postal Service designates the week of May 21 through the 26th as mailbox improvement week. It urges the public to provide weatherproof mail receptacles that are near in appearance, conveniently located, and safe to use. Rural-mailbox rules require boxes on the right side of the road in the travel direction.
Youth For Understanding seeks a host family for an exchange student for the coming school year. Contact G. E. Stephenson at Greene High School, 823-5631. Students are sponsored through the Youth For Understanding program.
Pack 26 youths prepare for a bicycle rodeo on May 20 to accompany the annual family picnic at Perrin Park. Greene Jaycees supervise races and tests, Greene Police inspect bikes for safety, and families bring potluck dishes while Cubs focus on riding skills and safety.
The Butler County Dairy Promotion Committee will sponsor a Milk Made Magic Contest during Dairy Day on June 27 at the Aplington Amvet Hall at 1:30 pm. Eight categories include mains, salads, breads, pies, desserts, cakes, cookies, and snacks.
County Crusade Chairman Peter Olthoff says the 1973 goal has been surpassed with help from hundreds of volunteers and county residents. Only six of 99 counties remain officially over goal. Contributions can still be mailed to Peter Olthoff in Parkersburg.
Butler County supervisors set a special election for Tuesday May 22 on a proposed 340000 bond for a new Allison courthouse. They would use 800000 of 940000 total from Revenue Sharing Funds with 150000 yearly from 1973 1974 1975 and 1976 to the project, aiming to limit local tax levies. If RS funds end after five years the balance would be funded by tax levy. otherwise the 140000 plus interest would come from taxes. The old courthouse would be razed, new building planned on the present grounds with a Cervetti and Weber plan for an 161 by 85 foot structure.
Roger L Shultz of Davenport Iowa has earned a Jet A type rating in the company's Lear Jet. The longtime chief pilot for Continental Restaurant Systems of Maime Illinois now qualifies as Pilot in Command with a co pilot. Shultz is the son of Mr and Mrs George R Shultz of Greene and a 1964 Greene graduate. He trained at NSACC and served in the US Army with duty in Japan and Vietnam. His flight training occurred in Arlington Virginia and Denver Colorado, where he earned a Professional Pilot major in 1970. He later taught at Colorado Flying Service in Denver and Midwest Flying in Davenport Iowa.
The club lists Ladies Day on Wednesday May 23 with events including Men Way 28 Shot Gun at 8:30 a.m. and a Potluck at 12:30 p.m. Also 2‑Ball at 2 p.m. Tuesday May 29 features Men’s Night.
Brian Frevert shattered Greene High School 880 record dating back to 1969, clocking 2 minutes 27 seconds at the Cadet Relays in Iowa Falls. He earlier won the 440 dash in 52.5 seconds, giving him a second victory that night. John Marven posted season bests in hurdles, while the team noted improving performances despite a weaker touch scoring.
The Greene Ramblerettes track squad finished third at the Ackley District Meet. Five events qualified and nine girls earned state meet berths for the upcoming Des Moines weekend. Team results were as shown.

Notable results include 1886 vol. run by Thane Miller Ist, shuttle hurdle by Linda Grumley and Barb Markle, plus relay crews placing second and third in 4x100 and 880 and distance medley.
