The piece critiques Kennedy era foreign commitments and calls for frank self evaluation. It lists student reporters Nancy Mitchell and Mrs Pamilla Smith as leaving the school system next year and notes others resigning are doing fine work.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy V. Newcomer of Lincoln Nebraska are visiting their son-in-law Mr. Clyde Stuntz and family. They spent April at the home of their son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Francis Wilson and Cathy while Mrs. Wilson recovered from major surgery. Mr Newcomer will attend Upper Iowa University Fayette graduation festivities where he is honored as a 50 year graduate. he is a former superintendent of Greene High School.
Greene Ramblers took part in the District Track Meet at Charles City on Saturday. Coach Jack Sandy reported three Greene athletes qualified for the State Meet in Des Moines on May 18. Gary Rottler finished 2nd in the open mile and 3rd in the open 1 mile. John Backer won the pole vault and Jim Curtis won the 180 yard low hurdles.
In J P Knight’s court Donald William McBurney of Greene faced a disturbing the peace charge with a motor vehicle and was fined 25 dollars with 4 dollars costs. Clare John Grendler was fined 10 dollars plus 4 dollars costs for nighttime speeding. In J P Moffett’s court Nick Marr appeared on his own and pleaded guilty to stealing items from the City Dump. the fine was 1 dollar.
Cub Scout pack meeting set for next Wednesday evening May 22 at 7 30 at the Elementary School. Boys turning 8 by September and their parents invited. Plans for Sad Dad Sunday June 3 will be made. Awards to Cubs to be presented. All Cubs and parents urged to attend.
Leta Elvira Lockwood Hudson 74 of Hampton died May 4 at Hampton Hospital after several days ill. She was born March 21 1889 in Butler County. Survived by husband Oscar J. Hudson four sons four daughters a brother a sister and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were May 7 at Warmaby Gramup Funeral Home Sheffield and First Baptist Church Sheffield with burial at West Fork Cemetery near Sheffield.
Mrs Sigurd Jacobson of Milwaukee Wisconsin is a patient at Mount Sinai Hospital where she underwent major surgery on Friday.
Butler County Fair sponsors a calf scramble open to county boys aged 13 to 16 with calves donated by local supporters. Calves won become the boy’s property. A tractor pulling contest is also planned for all farmers. Rules available from Mrs John Brandt Allison Iowa Secretary.
Mrs Harry Brinkman who chairs the Dayton Township cancer drive reported a total of $112 collected from township residents. Eight ladies assisted Mrs Brinkman in this fundraising effort.
Bil Thompson and Tim Bramer, juniors at Greene Community High School, were chosen to attend Boy's State at Camp Dodge near Des Moines for one week in June. Bil serves on the student council and excels in speech and music, while Tim played varsity football and sang in vocal music and has two years on the student council. Both are sponsored by the American Legion and the Veterans Club.
Russell Meyers a long time Gamble dealer since 1938 celebrates the stores 25th anniversary with a special sale this week. Meyers joined the Gamble dealer network in April 1938 and in August 1957 the store moved to its current Greene Theatre site. Prior to 1957 the shop stood west of Bellow’s Barber Shop now part of Kramer Furniture.
Greene Ramblerette track team places second at the district meet in Wellsburg posting strong showings. Five Greene athletes qualify for the state meet in Des Moines with events featuring Stuntz in the 60 yard hurdles and Allison in the 220 yard dash among others.
The Dragster by Gary Ross will be published in Lyrical Iowa after being chosen from 800 Iowa school entries. Poet Gary Ross is guided by English teacher Mrs. Pamilla Smith. Two more poems, The Passing of Time by Mrs. Smith and Dive Bombers by Vernon Smith, will appear.
Dr. and Mrs. R F Ludwig attended the centennial meeting of the Iowa State Dental Association at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines from May 6 to 8.
Robert Curtis local postmaster announces rural route patrons must use standard approved mailboxes kept in good condition and visible ownership. Names should be labeled on the side or door. unservicable or misinstalled boxes delay delivery and may weather damage. corrections due by May 27 and a report sent to the Regional office.
Mr. Henry Behrends Jr. of Clarksville, director of Butler County Municipal Civil Defense, finished a five day Civil Defense Management course at OCD Staff College in Battle Creek Michigan. He will attend the Shelter Management Instructor course May 12 to 17 1963 to train others in fallout shelter management and emergency operations.
Astronaut Gordon Cooper is launched into orbit at 7 04 a m for a 22 orbit mission aimed at surrounding the earth before return. All systems were go as Cooper begins his first lap in the projected flight with landing planned at a designated area.
Butler County car and truck registrations for the past week include Harold Heeren of Bristow and Kenneth and Annette Smith of Ackley with Chevrolet and Ford models. Names appear with multiple towns such as Allison, Parkersburg, New Hartford, Clarksville, Dumont, Aplington, and Greene, listing dealers and brands including Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge.
Heavy rainfall north of Greene late Thursday pushed the Shell Rock River 4 feet above normal and 2 feet over flood stage, flooding lowland farms and the Greene dry run. The crest arrived Friday afternoon, with continued high water after additional weekend rain. Flood Creek reached a record high and two bridges near Powersville remained closed into Tuesday.
The State Conservation Commission announced hunting season opening dates for several game birds and animals. Pheasant and Hungarian partridge open November 9, quail November 2, squirrel and rabbit September 14, and raccoon hunting begins at 12 noon October 19. Deer and waterfowl seasons will be set in late summer. dates subject to change based on population counts.
Senator Grassley reflects on his no vote against liquor by the drink in the previous campaign, notes the new law tightens controls with a dram shop provision, implied consent blood tests, and bonds or licenses. He argues the passage allows calmer discussion and emphasizes personal conviction and landlord responsibility for license violations.
Ramblers claim sectional tournament victory and advance to district finals. Butler County Dairy Day set for June 22 at Parkersburg with Dairy Princess Contest open to eligible candidates ages 18 to 23 as of October 1, 1963. Co sponsors include Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce and County Dairy Promotion Committee.
The Greene Ramblers crushed Dumont 8 to 0 and 11 to 2 in district play at Mason City. Nile Myers pitched a 1 hit shutout against Dumont and combined with Mark Ott for a 6 hit, 14 strikeout effort against St Ansgar. Greene advances to face Nora Springs in the finals this afternoon at 3:30 in Mason City.
The Wo mans Club announces Miss Ott will supervise summer playground activities at Perrin Park. She cites needed materials including small cans with lids, plastic bottles of all sizes, jars, small frozen lemons, orange juice cans, cardboard tubes, and small pieces of ribbon and metallic paper.
Lieutenant John O'Brien departed Tuesday evening for New Iberia Louisiana after a three week stay with his mother Mrs George O'Brien. He has spent three years in Iwikuni Japan.
