Bruce Cheney will sing in Tosca at the State College of Iowa Music Theatre in Cedar Falls at 8 15 p m on Thursday May 5 as part of the spring music festival. The program also features Trouble in Tahiti by Bernstein a satire on suburbia. Cheney is from Greene and leads a cast including Joan Anderson Edmund Brunskill Douglas Sherman and Tom Philips with connections to La Bohème.
Iowa State University awarded scholarships to 538 new students, with Candace A. Ray among recipients. Grants under the Higher Education Act of 1965 assist those with financial need, covering up to half their need. Awards range from 100 to 1000 dollars including matching funds, and many students will enroll as freshmen or transfers next fall.
The Butler County Council of Republican Women will hold its spring meeting at the Boyd Building in Shell Rock on Thursday evening May 5 at 8:00. Ellen's Fashions of Waverly will present spring styles with local models. Coffee and cookies follow a short business session. County president Mrs Charlies Grassley and local chairman Mrs Mary Leigh Drake invite all community women.
Henry Adelmund aged 50 died after a lingering illness at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital Charles City. He farmed east of Greene and is survived by his wife three daughters six sons his father and many siblings. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Clarksville with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery Parkersburg.
Des Moines honors Miss Freda Maass of Greene with a Certificate of Appreciation for 30 years of community welfare service with Butler County Board of Social Welfare. Maass has served as secretary of the board throughout all thirty years.
The Iowa State Conservation Commission today announced opening dates for walleye sauger pickerel and northern pike seasons on natural lakes. Walleye and sauger daily limit five with a ten fish possession. northern pike three daily with six in possession. Prospects for early pike fishing look good if weather remains favorable with best action in spawning areas and shallow water. Bullhead and crappie fishing reported as good statewide. trout streams in good condition.
The Greene Fire Department was summoned around 11:00 p m Friday to a false fire alarm at the Farmers Elevator in Greene. The automatic system accidentally discharged the alarm.
The Spring Conference of the Third Iowa District of The American Legion and Auxiliary will be held in Tama on Wednesday May 11. Over 400 delegates from ten counties are expected. Sessions begin 9:45 a.m. in the Legion Hall with a Service School, noon lunch, and afternoon business meetings led by District Commander Henry Abbas. Delegates to the National Convention will be chosen during the afternoon. The Auxiliary meets at 10 a.m. in the Methodist Church with a noon luncheon. A joint banquet at 6:30 p.m. in St. Patrick’s School features remarks by Iowa leaders. All Legionnaires and Auxiliary members are urged to attend.
Mrs Gladys Ditchen is back at home Friday evening after a brief hospital stay. The recall notes she was a patient for a few days.
C Kretzschmar wins the rotisserie as Peeples Natural Gas representative Roy Stolen presents the prize to Clarence Kretzschmar. A large Greene crowd attended last Friday’s grand opening described as a big success. The Stolen family recently moved from Lake Mills to Greene and joined St Peter's Lutheran Church.
Greene Girl Scouts collect old newspapers next Friday after school. Residents should place papers at curb or display a sign indicating availability as Scouts drive down each street gathering items.
The Women’s City Bowling Association will hold a meeting at El Bar Lanes next Tuesday evening May 10 at 7 o’clock. All members are urged to attend.
The Rambler track team under Ronald Mielke competed in the Comet Relays at Charles City placing fourth in Class D as Sheffield finished first and Darwin Ramker won the 100 yard dash in 10.6. The 440 yard relay team of Ruffridge Barth Hagarty Ramker won in .474 with three season firsts overall, while the $80 relay team finished fourth. They also competed at the Cadet Relays in Iowa Falls placing 6th and 7th with Ramker again taking the 100 yard dash in 10.4 and Hogue fifth in high hurdles. The 440 relay won in 46.1 and Bamker set a meet record in the 220 yard dash at 23 seconds. At Clear Lake Relays Ramker won the 100 in 10.7 and the 440 relay won in 46.5 as Ramker and Shultz posted strong marks. An invitational at Rockford had Ramker first in the 100 in 10.2, Shultz winning the mile in 5:09.4, and the 440 relay first in 46.8. Next, Cedar Falls district meet and Cold Bowl Conference meet at Rockford loom.
Mrs Towight Barnhart is notified as recipient of a National Defense Education Act sponsored scholarship to attend an eight week English Institute at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The award covers tuition and stipends for this summer program.
An arts and crafts show will be held at the high school next Monday evening May 6 from 7 30 to 9 00. Everyone is invited with no admission charge. Exhibits will feature works from Gary Oglee and Miss Donna Thomas classes and Ralph Potter's industrial arts department.
Public Assistance payments in Butler County totaled 4 880 959 for April, with a drop of 244 130 from prior month. Old Age Assistance paid 2 423 507, Aid to Dependent Children 1 932 627, Aid to Blind 104 465, Disabled 110 610, and Medical Aid to the Aged 307 750. Average per ADC person 28.98 for subsistence and 4.16 for medical care, totaling 43 14 per person. Counts: 17 723 to 184 Old Age cases, 8713 to 43 Medical Aid to the Aged, 87328 to 55 ADC cases for 181 persons, 1 137 for 7 blind, and 1 337 for 20 disabled. Total spent 28 238.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled unanimously that county courthouses must stay open for business 516 days a week including Saturday mornings. The decision overturns Judge Tobin’s Benton County ruling that a 1965 law requiring Saturday openings was unconstitutional.
Bowl-off winners El-Bar Lanes topped Riverside Cafe 4 to 3 in Rollers League while Miller Real Estate beat Van Dyke Limestone in Hot Shot League. Woodmen Accident and Life edged John Deere 4 to 3 in Town and Country League Friday program. high scores include Chamagne Sneed 181 and Leitha Greothuis 407. Dorothy's Beauty Shop swept Greene B ana Win to claim the Tuesday Alley Cat League title with top games by Betty Markle and Fern Clark.
The Steering Committee and new directors of the North Town Area Community College gathered at Mason City airport Tuesday evening to install the directors. Mrs. James H. Graven of Greene attended, with three State Department of Public Instruction members advising on procedures. Directors drew terms from a hat. Dr Linn of Sheffield drew a three year term. Dr. McAllister of Manly was elected chairman among nine directors.
The nine NIAD counties report total farm sales of 233 million dollars for 1964, an 11.4 percent rise from 1959. Wright County leads gains at 33 percent, Hancock follows with 22 percent, while Floyd shows a 4 percent drop despite per farm gains. County figures include Butler 25 million, Cerro Gordo 25 million, Floyd 23 million, Franklin 81 million, Hancock 25 million, Mitchell 22 million, Winnebago 17 million, Worth 16 million, and Wright 25 million.
Improving James Steere son of Mr and Mrs Leo Steere has shown progress at St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. He is listed in 2nd floor Room 239.
The Junior Senior Banquet and prom were held Saturday evening with 154 students and teachers present for the 6 30 banquet. Decorations featured a Misty Moonlight sail boat lake mural and stars. Craig Cheney welcomed seniors and Linda Stuntz responded. Barbara Katcher read the class prophecy Jim Truitt gave the class will and Supt W J Tatum offered prayer and announcements. Dean Niehaus Combo provided music for the prom after the banquet. Punch was served from a wishing well during the dance. Mothers of juniors prepared the banquet meal and parents of seniors chaperoned a Grub dance from 2 00 to 4 00 a m with casual clothes. Breakfast closed the morning's entertainment.
In Georgia Tom Lewis arrived at Fort Gordon last Friday morning after a two week furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Harold Lewis. He has completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and is now training in communications at Fort Gordon. His new address is Pvt. Thomas E. Robert Ross came home Saturday afternoon from St Mary Hospital in Rochester Minnesota where he is treated for injuries from a car accident he will return to Rochester next Tuesday for a checkup
Mrs. David Markle, local chairman, announced that Greene residents gave a total of $601.74 to the cancer drive, an increase of $45.74 over 1965 receipts.

Mrs. Floyd Fiddick of Greene and Mrs. Roger Reinhart of Marble Rock learned Monday evening of Gale Hillman’s death at Topeka Veterans Hospital in Kansas. Funeral services are pending at Junction City with Moss Inn Funeral Home in charge as sisters visited him over the weekend.
In the sectional first round at Dumont on Thursday Rockford Warriors upset the Ramblers 4 to 1. Lynn Gabe pitched well allowing no earned runs with 8 strikeouts though the Ramblers had 4 unearned runs due to defensive errors. Greene provided the Ramblers lone run with a fourth inning score after Jeff Drakle reached on a hit by pitch and Lynn Gabe doubled.
Four Iowa State University students received prizes from the mathematics department at Pi Mu Epsilon’s annual banquet on April 27. Daryl Fischer won the Chevron Research Company undergraduate scholarship of 750 dollars. Brian Crossley earned the Pi Mu Epsilon Award of 40 dollars. Steven Pruess received the Din Lewis Hall award of 50 dollars. Kelton Kinnick was awarded the Gertrude Herr Adamson Scholarship in Mathematics, worth 35 dollars.
