Retired Green Post Office Clerk Reflects on Service
Max Bellows retired April 26 after 35 years as a mail clerk in Green missing 11 days of service. He recalls trains, Rock Island Rockets, and rural routes evolving to today’s trucked mail. Bellows, who started May 14, 1939, helped operate under two postmasters and noted postage changes and growth in local boxes and rural families. A retirement dinner was held April 23 at Elgar Lanes with coworkers and their spouses. He plans to take it easy and enjoy small town life while staying connected to friends and former colleagues.

Linda Liehr 30 died April 24 at University Hospital Iowa City after a long illness. She was born November 9 1942 and educated at Harmony Minnesota and Cornell College Mount Vernon. Survived by husband James Des Moines parents Warren Dorothy Hardy five brothers one grandmother and several aunts uncles. Services April 7 Vogel Funeral Home Dumont officiated burial in Dumont Cemetery.

Hampshire Swine Contest At Western Dinos University
Gary Berna of Charles City Iowa enters Hampshire Swine Breeders from across the United States at Western Dinos University Test Station Macomb Illinois for the Hampshire Summer Meat Hog Conference set in Springfield Illinois on July 23 24 25 and 26. Bruce Binglewell manages the test station to collect average daily gain figures as the annual Hampshire Swine Registry sponsors the event in Peoria Illinois.

Mason City Hospital Transfer for Oldest Local Resident
Aredale area’s oldest resident Peter Helt suffered a fractured hip and was treated at Franklin General Hospital before transfer to Mercy Hospital in Mason City for surgery. Wunsch Pike of Greene was the low bidder on the Marble Rock sewer system, announced Tuesday with bids of 279,646.10 and second low at 288,522.25.

The Greene Community Center honored two memorial gifts, a 4 channel AM FM radio with 8 track deck from M M Charles Pyatt & sons for Scott, and a public address system for the upstairs auditorium from Mrs Tom Albrecht. The Greene Jr High Band and Vocal Departments will present their annual Song Concert on Tuesday evening May 7 at 745 pm in the old gym. A cabaret setup will offer punch coffee and cookies at tables during the program. The Junior High Chorus directed by Mr Robert Philips will sing popular songs including Cherish Happiness Beautiful Sunday Pollution Day by Day. The Band directed by Mr Douglas Bengtson will perform Three Songs of Colonial America Play Me The Best of George M Cohen and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The Wind Ensemble will play Air for Band and Royal Celebration. The Jaz Band will perform Crunchy Granola Suite Tonight West Side Story and Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show. End of an era Greene Recorder ends old press era
The Greene Recorder's 90 plus year old press was recycled last week as the paper shifts to offset printing at Osage newspapers. A computerized typesetter will be installed and the shop rearranged for efficiency. The change promises a more readable, attractive newspaper with larger type and updated layout.

Anne Voigts Presents Paper At Experimental Biology Meeting
Anne Voigts presented a paper at the 58th Annual Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Meeting in Atlantic City New Jersey held April 7 to 12. The paper titled Efferent Pathways of the Coronary Chemo Reflex was coauthored with Dr Alyn Mark of the University of Town. Voigts, a sophomore at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, won second place and a $50 prize at Iowa Student Medical Research Day after completing research funded by a Student Research Fellowship. She also spoke at the 1974 Midwest Student Medical Research Forum at the University of Illinois in Chicago in February.
