The Waterloo Social Security District head for Butler and seven surrounding counties retired March 22 after 31 years with the SSA. Earl T. Johnson, district manager since 1940 with a World War II army service gap, oversaw 23 staff and 34,659 beneficiaries receiving 2,503,111 monthly. Richard L. Barker presented a retirement certificate. A replacement has not been named.
Vena Gail Kelly underwent major surgery at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester last Monday. The health event was reported with concise notes on the patient and the institution involved.
Ruth Armstrong a former Greene resident and daughter of Mrs. Frank Noehl of Marble Rock joins the supporting cast of the Hollywood production That Little Old Lady From Pasadena. Mae Clarke stars with William Tomlinson in the male lead. Rehearsals began last week and opening night is set for April 19. A tour is planned that may bring the show to Mason City or Clear Lake.
The Greene Community School band department invites the public to a Band-o-Rama concert this evening at 7 45 in the high school auditorium. Performances by junior high concert band high school stage band and high school concert band with solos by Lyle Williamson Mary Rottler Duane Brinkman and Shari Johnson plus ensembles including woodwind quintet and French horn quartet. The stage band will showcase modern jazz. Season tickets will be honored and tickets sold at the door. Refreshments provided by Music Mothers.

Bill Mazula, 41, of Parkersburg, pleaded guilty in Allison District Court to stealing 1100 from Parkersburg High School on March 7. He admitted taking another 680 from school offices over four years. Sentencing set for April 26 by Judge C H Wild. Board suspended him indefinitely.
No classes in Greene Community Schools on March 29 and April 1. March 29 is for Parent Teacher Conferences and Junior Senior High School Inservice programs for teachers. April 1 teachers attend North Central District convention in Webster City. Classes resume April 2.
The American Cancer Society will conduct its Cancer Crusade Fund Drive in April to support research education and community service activities. Mrs Verle Barth chairs Greene County with a slate of volunteer captains and workers listed in detail.. An educational film Who Me sponsored by the society was shown at First State Bank for employees by Education Chairman Mrs Marvin Drakle of Clarksville.
The Republican Presidential County Convention met at the Allison Courthouse. Twenty five delegates were chosen for the State Presidential Convention in Des Moines on April 16 and 17 and twenty five were elected for the State Convention on June 4. Delegates include Cliff Burroughs and Verle Barth from Coldwater Township and Norman Graven and Lawrence Prunty from the area. Mrs. Herman Stubbe will attend the Presidential Convention from Dayton Township with Clinton March attending the State Convention. Resolutions were adopted and proposals drafted for consideration at both conventions.
Greene Fire Department answered five fire calls from Sunday through Tuesday afternoon, all grass fires. Distinct incidents included a blaze behind the Mark Merfeld home, fires at the Louis Downing farm south west of Greene and the Robert Watkins farm east of Greene, a church yard fire behind St. Mary's Catholic Church, and a second blaze at the Tyden No. 1 farm occupied by the Robert Bertram family.
The third annual Butler County Honors Banquet will be held Tuesday evening April 2 in the Allison-Bristow Hot Lunch Room. Forty nine senior students from seven county high schools have invitations, based on NHS membership or a 3.2 or better GPA over seven semesters. Parents and local officials are invited. The Butler County Board of Education underwrites costs. Guest speaker is O Craig Ause pastor St Pauls Lutheran Hampton with the speech titled The Beginning Of A New Day. Mr Crabtree principal Clarksville will be toast master. Students are handling decorations and entertainment.

State Conservation Commission and game officials urge Iowa farmers in the Feed Grain Program to seed diverted acres early to ensure good nesting cover and better erosion control. They note eligibility for cost sharing through ASCS and advise contacting local ASCS offices before seeding. About 115,000 Iowa farmers participate, diverting roughly 3.5 million acres for cover and erosion control.
Walter W. Wilhelm Butler County Clerk of Court released the list of petit jurors for the second quarter session covering April May and June. The roster includes jurors from Coldwater Township Beaver Albion Monroe Butler Shell Rock Ripley Jackson West Point Bennedette Pittsford Dayton Fremont and Madison with individuals named for each locality.
Mrs Leland Whiteside came home Wednesday from Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City after a two week stay. Mrs Zoa Miller returned home Friday after a week in the same hospital where she was treated for a broken vertebra in her back.
The Third District American Legion and Auxiliary hold a one day Spring Conference in LaPorte City on March 30 1968 drawing over 350 delegates from Benton Blackhawk Bremer Butler Franklin Grundy Hardin Marshall Tama and Wright counties. Activities include registration at 845 am service school 10 am district board meetings noon banquet with speakers Chauncey Francis and Dorothy Christensen and afternoon sessions electing district officers and selecting delegates for the New Orleans National Convention.
Christine Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs Duane Smith named to the University of Missouri Columbia Dean's List for the first semester. The sophomore achieved a 3.5 grade point average at the school in Columbia Missouri.

Ward Mehlan and Hamline University art majors completed a four day field trip to New York City cultural centers. They visited the Guggenheim Whitney Metropolitan Lincoln Center and Finch College to view major exhibitions and private collections while also touring over 50 galleries on 57th Street and Madison Avenue. Professor Paul Smith led the group on the third annual art field trip with evenings at Broadway shows and concerts.
EN3 Paul Shultz phoned his parents Mr and Mrs Raymond Shultz from Singapore on Saturday March 16. He was on rest and recreation leave and returned to Dong Ha Vietnam on March 19. His unit is building bridges on the Cua Viet River.
The Butler County Fair Board announced construction of a new steel amphitheatre at the Allison fairgrounds replacing the 1886 wood grandstand. Carter Steel Supply will build it. a 60 foot bleacher addition lifts seating by about 950. The five day fair runs July 24 to 28 with racing and rodeo acts. The 1968 exposition will be the fifth annual fair.

The elementary school will display student artwork from all grades in the school auditorium on Friday March 29. Miss Wilda Hill the art teacher said the exhibit will be open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Katie Astor daughter of Mr and Mrs William Astor is one of eight girls chosen to train in Radiologic Technology at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Mason City. A Greene Community School senior she will begin training on July 1.
Residents of the Greene Community School district are invited to tour the high school on Friday March 29. Tours run 9:00 am to 12 noon 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. An 8:00 pm general meeting will address unanswered questions with students and teachers available to explain building usage and needs.
Mary Rottler a junior and Melinda Drake a sophomore from Greene were named to the girls All State Basketball Honor Roll. Rottler daughter of Vern and Mrs Rottler appears with the forwards and Drake daughter of Keith and Mrs Drake is listed with the guards.
Leo Theodore Ramker age 73 died Monday in Ogden Utah. Born March 9 1895 in Clarksville he was son of Theodore and Anna Ramker. Survived by daughters Barbara Stevenson Rochester Minnesota and Audrey Hogan Waterloo three grandchildren and two brothers Theodore Greene and Vern Waterloo. One son died earlier. Graveside rites at St Marys Cemetery Greene Saturday at 9:00 AM Rev Joseph Murphy officiating. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
New resident Mr and Mrs Arthur Krull welcomed a daughter named Darcy Rae born on Monday March 25 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital The infant weighed 5 pounds 14 ounces Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Lee Ross of Charles City and Mr and Mrs George Krull of Greene.
