The editor congratulates Flora Stubbe and Ann Rottler for all-state listing selections. It notes current and projected poverty program costs per person and questions who will bear the costs as the program evolves, while musing on lifting the impoverished social structure and storage of gear and tools.
Mrs Galen Miller and Mrs Don Heuberger won the women s doubles division of the Farm Bureau Handicap Bowling Tournament with a 1290 total. Scratch scores were 605 and 500. About 1 180 bowlers from 9 Iowa district tournaments competed over seven days at Bowl O Mar Lanes Des Moines. Also competing were Mrs Wayne Fischer Mrs Ralph Behnke and Mrs Ralph Marsh in the women s team event while Galen Miller Don Heuberger Leo Gabe and Paul Jepsen bowled for the men. Duane Wylam of Waverly, Miller s brother in law, finished third in men s singles.
The NIAD Executive Committee chaired by Bob Rost met to review the February 9 progress report and plan a third overall NIAD report for January 1967. Two new study committees on Culture and Taxes will be formed, with county members named to start work, and temporary leaders appointed for now.
The Greene Community High School junior class will stage Bull in a China Shop on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings March 29 and 30 at 8 15 p m. The three act comedy features six old maids in a boarding house who are in love with a middle aged detective. Tickets are sold by juniors and at the door.
At the Floyd County Beef Producers Association annual banquet in Charles City on March 15, Bruce Pennington of Rudd was elected president, Charles Dight of Rockford vice president, and Dixon Marsh of Greene secretary treasurer. Nick Schmitt and Bob Schmitt of Rockford were elected directors, replacing George Trettin and Leo Staudt Jr. The eighth board seat will be filled later. 70 members had signed up for 1966.
The Democratic precinct caucuses will be held Monday evening March 28 at 8 00 pm. County chairman urges Democratic supporters to attend in their precinct. Coldwater and Dayton Townships meet at City Hall Greene. Fremont and Butler at Clarksville City Hall. Bennedette Township at Mrs DeBerg home. West Point Township at the Court House.
In Hospital Walter Detra was admitted to the Mercy Hospital in Mason City on Saturday afternoon where he is receiving treatment. Roy Martzahn was admitted to the Mercy Hospital in Waverly on Friday afternoon for treatment. Carlton Bier was admitted to the Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City for treatment on Thursday evening.
Airman Steven J. Campbell son of Mr and Mrs John R Campbell of Dougherty has been chosen for training at Sheppard AFB Texas as an Air Force aircraft maintenance specialist. He is a Sheffield-Chapin High School graduate who recently finished basic training at Lackland AFB Texas.
N F O Supper Charlies Pyatt of Greene, president of Floyd County N F O, announced a sausage supper at St. Marys Parish Hall Roseville on Tuesday evening March 29. The Vigortonettes quartet will entertain before the speaking program. The main address will be by A L Holzbauer, pastor of a Waterloo Indiana rural parish.
Hattie Bendickson 81 died Monday March 21 at St Joseph's Mercy Hospital Mason City after a long life born November 25 1884 in Litchfield Minnesota to John and Betsy Anderson. She lived with her daughter and son in Greene and is survived by Fern Bendickson Mason City two grandsons Bruce and John Mead a Minnesota brother and sister. Funeral at Zion Lutheran Church Litchfield Minnesota Thursday afternoon. Bendickson was a charter member of the church.
New residents Mr and Mrs Paul Schrage of Greene welcomed a daughter named Cindy Gail born Tuesday March 15 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 10 pounds 3 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs A J Schrage of Greene and Mr and Mrs Delbert Ries of Belvidere Illinois. Patrick Dale Schrage born March 17 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital weighing 10 pounds 2 ounces. He has two brothers Michael and Scott and two sisters Peggy and Diana.
A total of 2979.62 was contributed in the Butler County Christmas Seal Campaign chaired by Mrs. John Roalf of Allison. Area towns and townships reported varied sums funding tuberculosis and respiratory disease programs including research, health education, public information, rehabilitation, and related projects.
The Butler County Farm Bureau women's committee will offer an 8 hour driver improvement course developed by the National Safety Council. The first of three sessions will be held April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. Advance registration of $100 can be paid at the Farm Bureau office in Allison or to committee members. The course is limited to 50 attendees and is open to both young people and adults.
James Gregory retired from the State Conservation Service will be honored at a smorgasbord supper Saturday evening sponsored by Sportsman’s Clubs of Butler and Franklin Counties. The Legion Club on the northwest corner of Reeds Lake near Hampton hosts the event with supper served from 6:30. All Sportsman’s Club members in Butler and Franklin Counties are invited.
Ann Rottler and Flora Stubbe seniors named to honorable mention on the girls all-state honor roll. Ann earned a forward spot while Flora was placed among the guards. This marks Flora's second year on the all-state honor roll.
Seaman Recruit Leon J. Glaspie USN son of Mr and Mrs Robert J Glaspie Greene has completed seven weeks of Navy basic training at the San Diego Naval Training Center He studied military subjects and learned seamanship survival drill and other core skills under experienced Navy petty officers before being assigned to a school shore station or ship based on tests preferences and Navy needs.
Butler County officials urge local decisions on Dutch elm disease control. Extension entomologist Harold Gunderson warns DDT or methoxychlor sprays may be used anytime next month but strong sprays can damage elm leaf buds after swelling begins. Bidrin injections in late spring may injure small or bark-damaged trees or those near concrete. Dormant spraying offers protection for valuable trees, with planning advised now to fit commercial applicators.
The Greene Commercial Club invites members and spouses to a banquet Tuesday evening March 28 at the elementary school. Serving starts at 6 30 p m. Guest speaker will be Paul Franzenburg state treasurer. Tickets available from Dr J T Truitt or Paul Wunsch. New business guests invited.
Butler County junior and senior high students may enter the District Soil Conservation Speech Contest on Wednesday April 13 at 8 00 p m in the R E C Building in Allison. Topics cover Water Conservation Vital to ALL with talks 5 to 10 minutes. Prizes include 25 00 savings bond first place 10 and 5 cash for second and third. County winner advances to regional contest with 25 15 and 16 prizes funded by Grinnell Mutual Insurance. State contest offers 250 scholarship plus 100 cash. second and third prizes 75 and 50. Entries accepted until April 1 at 5 p m. Co sponsors include Ladies Auxiliary Iowa Association of Soil Conservation District Commissioners and Farmers Mutual Insurance Company Grinnell.
Robert Wamsley of Greene claimed the champion market hog at the Butler County Market Hog Show in Allison with a 200 pound Hampshire that also won lightweight. Reserve champion went to Marvin Voigts, also of Greene, with a 190 pound hog. Top ten placements across light and heavyweight divisions listed, with 86 hogs entered. co sponsors were Bauman Livestock and Butler County Swine Producers Association.
The Cub Scouts will hold a pack meeting next Wednesday evening March 30 at 7:80 in the elementary school auditorium.
The annual Farmer-Business Banquet at Allison is scheduled for Monday evening February 28 with supper at 6 45 p m at the Farm Bureau Hall. J Richard Palmer president of Morningside College Sioux City will be the featured speaker and discuss the Taft Hartley Law repeal campaign. A Shell Rock band will provide entertainment. Tickets available at the Farm Bureau Office in Allison or from any Farm Bureau board member FS or insurance salesman.
Blizzard conditions swept North Iowa forcing school closures and hazardous travel. Sleet and hail gave way to snow with strong winds, disrupting transportation. Interstate Power crews restored outages after two utility poles were blown down. Greene and nearby towns faced power lines damage while northern areas remained without electricity due to ongoing storms.
John Osier has completed the army helicopter school course at Fort Eustis Virginia and is on a nineteen day furlough at his parents home Mr and Mrs Donald Osier. He will report to Fort Benning Georgia on April 3.
Marine Private James R. Bochmann, son of Mr and Mrs Henry Bochmann of Route 2 Greene Iowa, graduated from eight weeks of intensified recruit training at the San Diego depot. He learned small arms marksmanship, bayonet fighting, drill, Marine Corps history and traditions, and will undergo four weeks of combat training followed by four weeks of basic specialist training before assignment to a permanent unit.
The State Services for Crippled Children will hold a cardiac clinic for under 21s at First Methodist Church in Waverly on Tuesday April 5. Eligible patients come from Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Fayette, Floyd, Grundy, Howard, and Winneshiek counties. Referrals from physicians are required. appointment cards will be mailed to parents.
Roger Weichers son of Mr and Mrs John Weichers has finished basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and is visiting his parents. He will report to San Francisco on April 2 following the visit.
A meeting on wills and estate planning will be held Wednesday April 6 at 1 30 p m in the Extension office at Allison. Kay A Connelly says Dr Neil E Hart of Iowa State University will present. Topics include property transfer objectives death with or without a will federal and Iowa inheritance taxes gift tax and estate settlement costs. The session runs about two hours and is open to all interested.
Butler County car and truck dealers join the 48th Annual State Automobile Dealers Convention in Des Moines from March 27 to 29. Speakers include Governor Hughes and Dr. Harvey Hahn of Dayton at the Tuesday luncheon, with Monday speakers Byron J. Nichols of Chrysler, Douglas Dean of Beverly Hills, and Fred Williams of Pennzoil. Topic highlights are traffic safety and proposed statewide compulsory motor vehicle inspection law for Iowa.
The Butler County Legion gathering at the Veteran's Club in Greene scheduled for this evening has been postponed to Wednesday March 30 at 8:00 p.m. The change affects all expected attendees and venue details.
