Iowa legislature maps out plan to shrink 50/100 seats
A bipartisan Iowa committee is designing reapportionment to cut the legislature to 50 Senate and 100 House seats. Computers plot districts by population, with a report due by April 1. The plan would erase 11 Senate and 24 House districts, potentially pairing incumbents and reshaping power as lawmakers react to the constitutional amendment. Republican leaders praise progress. Democrats say little has been achieved. Senate actions include ethics rules and a citizen reapportionment commission, while a tuition grant bill for private colleges faces questions of constitutionality. Locals: K D Crowley and others discuss recent moves and community visits amid the session.
