The editor laments money chores and asks why people suffer fines for candy wrappers while waste dumps go unchecked. He notes spring sellers like plastic rolls burlap bags and sand and warns against polluted rivers while calling for tougher anti pollution laws and peace amid repeating lessons from war.
Butler County Board of Supervisors adopted an 8 ton load limit on local secondary and Farm to Market roads by March 17 resolution. The embargo is effective immediately for up to 60 days, or sooner if conditions improve, and may apply to all paved roads in Butler County.
The Butler Soil Conservation District will elect a district Commissioner on April 8. Nomination petitions require at least twenty five signers from landowners or operators in the district and are due by March 25. Nominees Roger Harmis of Allison and Richard Allan of Parkersburg will stand for election at Greene Elementary School Building.
Northrup King and Company honored its top area producers at a Waverly dinner held last Tuesday at Carver's Restaurant. Lloyd Bigier presented trophies to winners in the Iowa Master Corn Growers Contests across counties, recognizing first second and third place finishers who used Northrup King seed corn. Winners included Karl Zimmerman Aredale and Paul Kramer Aredale in Butler County, Arlin Wente Waverly in Bremer County, Gerald Kingery Greene first and Lyle Stauffer Greene third in Floyd County, Bernard Van Deest Waterloo second in Black Hawk County, Leo Marten Dougherty first in Four County Institute, Roger Hucke Sumner first in Chickasaw County, and Homer Wakefield Alden first for Scenic City Kiwanis at Town Falls.
Greené Community Schools Music Department will present a spring concert on Wednesday March 26 at 7 45 p m in the high school auditorium. Performances include the high school concert band stage band mixed chorus junior high concert band and the sixth grade cadet band with selections from Sousa Eberlin Bencriscutto Caudill and more plus refreshments by Music Mothers.
The Greene School Board declined an invitation to join the North Iowa Cedar League Conference. The Ramblers will remain competitors in the Corn Bowl Conference after a Monday evening meeting. North Iowa members listed include Ackley Geneva Eldora Grundy Center LaPorte City and U N I High at Cedar Falls.
The Greene Sportsman's Club hosts its annual meeting and oyster stew at the Veteran's Club in Greene on Friday evening March 28. Stew served at 6 30 p.m. Tickets available at local barber shops tavern banks hardware and from club members. After supper officers are to be elected with two color films shown The Gallant Mr Stonewall and Fishing Luck or Logic.
The Army Corps of Engineers warns floods of record potential in Iowa and nearby states if warming trends bring heavy rains. Snow cover on the Shell Rock and Cedar rivers is well above normal. Mrs Henry Bliss returned to her Charles City home on Saturday from Floyd County Memorial Hospital where she underwent surgery.
Elementary school parents invited to attend conferences on Saturday March 29 to review their child progress. The scheduling on Saturday follows winter snow vacations.

Sunday service at St. Peter’s Lutheran marked the mortgage burn of the parsonage at 106 South 4th. built 1958, home to Rev. I J Deines and Rev. Paul Metzger families. About 200 attended a post ceremony potluck in the church basement with former pastor Rev. I J Deines.
Harold Shultz remains unconscious and in critical condition after a train truck collision on January 4. Doctors at St Mary's Hospital Rochester Minnesota report a slight improvement. He is in a private room with restricted visiting as donations to the Harold Shultz Fund continue at First State Bank.
Mr and Mrs Craig Smeins of Broomfield Colorado announce the birth of their son Shane James born Tuesday March 11 at St Josephs Hospital Denver weighing 8 pounds Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Paul Sloan of Longmont and Mr and Mrs Henry Smeins.
The Allison Trojanettes defeated Laurens 79-67 and upset Union-Whit ten 73-58 before losing to Montezuma 66-60 in the state championship. Diane Stanek and Lanae Alberts made the all tournament team as Dumont and Allison-Bristow entered state play with perfect records.
Minnie Reinking was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City last Saturday morning March 15 for observation and treatment. She will be there for a few days. Room 252.
Marine Lance Corporal Bruce D. Fischer, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fischer, completed a 15 week basic electronics course. W L Kline was taken to Memorial Hospital in Mason City Friday morning after suffering a heart attack. He is a patient in Room 211.
Grassley warns several Iowa area colleges face financial trouble amid a flawed aid formula. He notes Marshalltown, Iowa Falls, Burlington, Keokuk and Creston areas rely on enrollments to draw state funds, boosting junior colleges over vocational programs. Legislators should redirect aid to strengthen vocational technical programs and curb recruitment incentives.

Fifty county residents were drawn for possible district court jury duty in the second calendar quarter of 1969 for April May and June. Jurors are listed by township with names such as Albion Robert Adelmund and Robert Geist and Beaver Catherine Adams and Carol Harken.
Kindergarten roundup for next year's class at Greene Community School scheduled Friday March 21. Children turning five before September 15 are eligible to register. Registration runs 9:00–12:00 and 1:00–4:00 with morning for A–M and afternoon for N–Z. Fee is $5 plus $1.80 for milk tickets. Bring birth certificate number and immunization and disease records.
The Internal Revenue Service will implement a new estimated tax system for 1969. About 10 million taxpayers were mailed new forms and instructions in February. Taxpayers should read instructions to determine filing requirements. No declaration is required if estimated tax not subject to withholding is likely under 40 dollars. Some taxpayers may increase wage withholding to avoid quarterly payments. The package includes forms, instructions, four vouchers, and pre addressed envelopes.
The Corn Bowl Conference released its All-Conference basketball teams with Greene players honored on both boys and girls rosters. Mary Rottler Donna Weichers and Melinda Drakle lead the first team for Greene girls, while Rich Siemens Jim Shultz head the first Greene boys team. Second team includes Wendell Stuntz for Greene Ramblers, with several other players named from surrounding towns. Honorable mention lists also feature Greene-area athletes across both genders.
Kyht reports that leadership aims for a tight ship in the 63rd General Assembly with steering committees to push bills forward. Dirksen Amendment, if passed, would allow a bicameral legislature to be apportioned by non population factors, needing 34 states for a constitutional convention. Iowa is a potential 33rd state, with Alaska hoped to join.
A care fund called Gary Jacobs Fund TM is being raised to help defray expenses for Gary Jacobs 21 of Clarksville who was seriously hurt in a car crash on October 13 1968. He was pinned under the wreckage until the next morning, treated at Sartori Hospital Cedar Falls and Allen Memorial Waterloo then moved to Younkers Rehabilitation Des Moines on December 2. His neck is fractured and he is paralyzed from the shoulders down. His father died January 17 1969. Clarksville St Johns Lutheran Church and Rev P C Matthias sponsor the drive. Carl Frascht returned from Scholtz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Wednesday after minor surgery on March 9. Max Wegand was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Thursday morning for medication and treatment and returned home on Tuesday.

Butler County Mutual Insurance Association of New Hartford Iowa joins in sponsoring the full color live action telecast of the Iowa boys State high school basketball tournament. Semifinals for Class AA and Class A are shown Friday March 21 and the championship games Saturday March 22 at Des Moines Veterans Auditorium. This is the ninth consecutive year Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and county mutuals co sponsor with American Dairy Association of Iowa. Five Iowa TV stations form the FarMutual Network WOI Ames originating station WMT Cedar Rapids KGLO Mason City KTIV Sioux City KTVO Ottumwa provide coverage.
